Cone powers Fairmont golfers to win over Jaguars

FAIRMONT — Mathew Cone earned meet medalist honors and teammate Hartley Aust garnered runner-up individual accolades to power the Fairmont Cardinals to a 187-220 season-opening golf victory over the Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther Jaguars on Thursday afternoon.

Cone birdied the par-3 fifth hole at Rose Lake Golf Course near Fairmont to highlight his meet-best nine-hole round of 41. Cone also connected for pars on Nos. 4 and 7.

Aust also produced a birdie by notching a 3 on the par-4 fourth hole to pace his total of 45. Aust also made par on Nos. 6 and 7 for the Cardinals.

Beau Becker contributed a round of 49 to Fairmont’s winning performance, Blake Hilgendorf and Ethan Buchan each carded 52s, while Nate Rakness chipped in a 60.

Gavin Kester made par on Nos. 6 and 7 to highlight his team-leading score of 49 for the Jaguars.

Lance Stevens generated a round of 55, Landon Zimmer fired a 57 and Wyatt Luhmann tallied a 59 to complete the Jaguars’ counting totals. Zach Flohrs and Jonah Carlson each chipped in 60s.

Fairmont (1-0) returns to the tee box at 1 p.m. next Thursday when it competes in the New Ulm Invitational.

The Jaguars square off against Maple River on Monday at Riverside Town & Country Club near Blue Earth.

North Union 172, Lake Mills 174, Belmond-Klemme 196 (Boys) — Chase Cummins pocketed medalist accolades to help the Warriors muzzle the Bulldogs by two strokes during triangular action Thursday at North Kossuth Golf Club in Bancroft, Iowa.

Cummins birdied the first hole to highlight his low-scoring nine-hole round of 40. Cummins also sank four par putts to pack scoring punch to his first-place performance.

Drew Henderson also made birdie on No. 1 to help pace his total of 41 for North Union. Henderson also contributed four pars to his second-best mark on the home team’s scorecard.

Teagon Fothergill and Cole Nicoson completed the Warriors’ counting scores. Fothergill carded a 42, including a birdie on No. 1 to complement two pars. Nicoson chipped in a 49 with two pars.

Caden Walders and Carter Martens rounded out North Union’s performance by shooting a 52 and a 58, respectively.

Garrett Ham netted a 41 to top Lake Mills, followed by Austin Stene (42), Kinser Hanson (45) and Denton Kingland (46), respectively.

Ashtin Wilms tallied a 41 to officially claim runner-up medalist honors for Belmond-Klemme.

Drew Crawford (49), Brody Kern (52) and Zach Hanson (54) rounded out the Broncos’ counting marks.

North Union competes against North Iowa and host West Hancock in a triangular on Monday at Britt, Iowa.

Lake Mills 221, Belmond-Klemme 233, North Union 234 (Girls) — North Union’s Olivia Von Bank captured individual medalist honors, but Claire Levine and the Bulldogs exited the North Kossuth Golf Club in Bancroft, Iowa, with the team triumph on Thursday.

Von Bank continued her low-scoring ways by firing a nine-hole round of 48 to pace the Warriors’ effort.

Aliyah Jones generated a total of 55 for North Union, Amelia Fothergill shot a 58, while Hannah Nielsen chipped in a 73.

Levine garnered runner-up medalist honors by shooting a 51 to top Lake Mills, while Josie Helgeson contributed a 53. Sophia Nelson and Judy Gallardo fired a 58 and a 59, respectively, to round out the Bulldogs’ counting marks.

Emilie Dougherty penciled in a round of 53 to top Belmond-Klemme, followed by Taylor McVey (57), Amara Kelley (61) and Ryleigh Eckhoff (62).

North Union competes against North Iowa and host West Hancock in a Top of Iowa Conference triangular on Monday at Britt, Iowa.
