WORTHINGTON — A doubles sweep lifted the Fairmont Cardinals tennis team to a 5-2 win over the Worthington Trojans during season-opening Big South Conference action on Tuesday in Worthington.

After spending the first few weeks of the preseason indoors due to inclement weather and cold temperatures, the Cardinals used a warm, sunny afternoon to get outdoors for its first dual meet.

Fairmont’s Carter Quist and Olivia Ortega combined court skills to best Victory Bu and Lance Gordon by a 6-2, 6-4 decision at No. 1 doubles.

Fairmont’s Wylee Frederiksen and Tyler Slama teamed up at second doubles to post a 6-2, 7-5 winning decision over Kaw Tha Blay and Bennett Oberloh.

The No. 3 doubles tandem of Fairmont’s Anthony Stegge and Simone Castro battled back from a one-set deficit exit the Worthington courts with a three-set victory in hand.

After losing a 6-1 opening set to the Trojans’ Caleb Barber and Dylan Dykstra, Stegge and Castro assembled a comeback to post set wins of 6-4 and 7-5 to net the fourth doubles point for the Cardinals.

In singles competition, Fairmont managed to halve the four matches.

Jack Hagen captured a team point for Fairmont at No. 1 singles, while teammate Sebastian Castro won at No. 4 singles to help the Cardinals pull off the victory.

Hagen defeated Ian Barber by a 6-2, 7-5 decision, while Sebastian Castro went on to beat Oziel Briones Flores 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).

Worthington’s Ezra Bonnett outlasted Dominick Lund-May by a 6-4 decision in the opening set at second singles. Bonnett then claimed the team point by winning the second set by a 6-0 margin.

Worthington’s Evan Hansberger collected his lineup’s other team point by netting a 6-4, 6-0 decison over Fairmont’s Noah Vetter during third singles action.

Fairmont (1-0) travels to St. James Area for a quadrangular tournament starting at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The Cardinals will compete against Winona Cotter, Luverne and host St. James Area.
