Becker, Rakness selected as Fairmont Area hockey MVPs

FAIRMONT — Lincoln Becker and Nate Rakness were selected as the Fairmont Area Cardinal boys hockey team’s most valuable players for the 2022-23 season.

Rakness was named the Cardinals’ MVP on offense, while Becker was tabbed as the red-and-white’s top defender.

Rakness, a junior forward, led Fairmont Area in total points (33) and goals (20), while netting the team’s No. 2 assist total (13).

Becker, a senior standout, contributed 12 points to the Cardinals’ offense on the strength of six goals and six assists.

Sophomore defender Tyler Kurt was selected as the Cardinals’ rookie of the year, while junior defender Connor Gronewald and junior Jace Prindle shared the team’s most improved accolades.

Kurt generated six assists and one helper on the season, Gronewald netted two goals and three assists, while Prindle chipped in one goal and three helpers.

Fairmont Area, which closed out its season with an 8-19 overall record, posted a 7-5 victory over Worthington during their Section 3A play-in postseason tournament game before being eliminated by New Ulm in the quarterfinals.
