Red Bulls’ Rohman earns 100th win, gold at BSC Meet

PIPESTONE — Martin County senior standout Carver Rohman earned the 100th victory of his esteemed prep wrestling career en route to standing atop the Big South Conference’s medals podium at 160 pounds on Saturday.

The Class AA No. 3-ranked Rohman improved his seasonal record to 27-0 by reeling off three consecutive wins to strike gold in steering the short-handed No. 8-ranked Red Bulls to fourth place in the 13-team standings in Pipestone.

Class A No. 2-ranked Jackson County Central claimed the BSC team tournament crown by generating 250.5 points, followed by runner-up St. Peter (179) and third-place Marshall (151). The Red Bulls, who competed only 10 wrestlers out of the 14 weight classes due to injuries, placed fourth with 125.

No. 4-ranked 220-pounder Max Olson and Maddex Faber each generated silver-medal efforts for the Red Bulls, Aden Welcome and Taylor Austin merited bronze medals, while Pierce Rohman and Riley Cole each finished fourth.

Carson Sturtz claimed fourth place and teammate Parker Meyers netted fifth to pace Blue Earth Area’s tie with Luverne for 10th place in the team standings.

“We were down a few guys, but I thought every one here today fought for each and every point we got,” said Red Bulls head coach Adam Williamson. “Overall, I thought we turned in a good effort, and it was nice to see Carver reach his milestone.”

Carver Rohman opened the BSC Meet’s 160-pound bracket by coasting to an 18-3 technical fall over Windom/Mountain Lake’s Montgomery Bjorklund in 3:04 before claiming another technical fall in the semifinals. Rohman bested St. Peter’s Taylen Travaille by a 24-8 margin in 4:09 to gain the finals.

Rohman then outdueled Class AA No. 4-ranked Tate Condezo (19-5) by an 8-6 decision during the 160-pound championship clash.

Olson, who won the 220-pound conference title in 2022, pinned his way to Saturday’s light heavyweight finals.

The Martin County senior standout pinned Worthington’s Win Lwe Aung in 1:46 during the quarterfinals before needing just 56 seconds to flatten Waseca’s Matthew Veroeven in the semifinals.

Class A No. 2-ranked 220-pounder Caleb Vancura — who pinned his way to the championship clash — of JCC then posted a 10-2 major decision over Olson to collect the BSC gold medal.

Faber, who placed third at 106 during his varsity debut as a seventh-grader last season, earned a step up on the medals podium with a silver-medal performance on Saturday.

Faber opened 113-pound action with a fall in 1:55 over Marshall’s Sam Deutz before pressing WML opponent Matthew Voehl’s shoulders to the canvas in 1:34 during the semifinals.

Redwood Valley senior Gavin Brandt then pinned the Martin County eighth-grade phenom in 1:34 to exit the Pipestone gymnasium with the gold medal.

Welcome received a first-round bye during 145-pound action for the Red Bulls before pinning WML’s Noah Holmberg in 3:38 in the quarterfinals.

The Martin County senior standout got pinned by New Ulm Area’s Winsten Nienhaus in 4:55 during the semifinals, but Welcome bounced back to earn the bronze medal. Welcome rolled to an 11-3 major decision over St. Peter’s Evan Walter in the third-place clash at 145.

Austin opened the 152-pound division with a 6-2 loss to Worthington’s Chase Byrne before needing just 46 seconds to pin Redwood Valley’s Zac Guggisberg in the wrestlebacks.

Austin then outdueled New Ulm Area’s Jamisen Frederickson in a high-scoring battle, 20-10, before receiving a medical forfeit from Byrne in a rematch for third.

Pierce Rohman followed Austin’s path to gain the third-place match at 106 for the Red Bulls. The Martin County eighth-grader was pinned by JCC’s Kayden Eller in opening-round action in 4:29.

Pierce Rohman, however, regrouped to upend Class AA No. 8-ranked Preston Xayachak of WML via a 7-5 overtime decision in the wrestlebacks.

Rohman then outlasted Marshall’s Lincoln Christenson by a 5-2 consolation semifinal decision before dropping an 11-6 decision to New Ulm Area’s Kane Johnson in the bronze-medal match at 106.

Cole pocketed fourth at 138 pounds by opening with a bye before pinning Worthington’s Miat Htoo in 1:40.

The Martin County senior standout then lost an 8-0 major decision to Pipestone Area’s Davis Budden in the semifinals before squaring off against St. Peter’s Nakiye Mercado in the third-place match. Mercado prevailed via a 19-4 technical fall.

BEA senior Carson Sturtz delivered a fourth-place showing at 126 pounds. Sturtz opened with a fall in 3:16 over Luverne’s Leif Ingebretsen before losing a 9-0 major decision to Marshall’s Landon Marhaler in the semifinals.

Sturtz answered by netting a 5-2 wrestleback win over New Ulm Area’s Tegan Kral before losing a 13-5 major decision to JCC’s Ben Dahlin in the third-place clash.

BEA senior Parker Meyers pinned Redwood Valley’s Jamen Hennen during his opening match at 170 before losing a narrow 3-1 quarterfinal decision to Class AA No. 10-ranked Christian Rodriguez of Waseca.

Meyers rebounded to pin Worthington’s Eh Day Htoo in wrestleback action in 1:27 before edging New Ulm Area’s Ty Frederick in the consolation semifinals by a 5-4 decision.

Meyers then collected the fifth-place medal by outlasting St. Peter opponent Joseph Connor by an 8-5 decision.

The Red Bulls (9-0) return to mat action Thursday against Mound-Westonka and the host Saints in St. Peter.

Blue Earth Area plays host to Maple River/United South Central on Tuesday night in Blue Earth.
