FAIRMONT — Pipestone Area eighth-grader Kaysa Douty and senior teammate Megan Lingen fended off Martin County Area’s youth movement spearheaded by junior Abi Chavez, seventh-grader Lillie Schultz and eighth-grader Mollie Leiding during a Big South Conference dual gymnastics meet on Tuesday night.

Douty and Lingen produced a respective 1-2 showing in the all-around competition to guide the visiting Arrows to a narrow 127.75-125.825 victory over the hometown Magic at Live Fit Sport & Wellness Center in Fairmont.

“We’re running the gauntlet this week, and tonight was the first of four over the next five days,” MCA head coach Annie Post said in reference to her lineup’s BSC dual meet at New Ulm on Thursday, another league clash at Windom on Friday and a spot in the Sweetheart Invitational on Saturday in Jackson. “We’ll definitely have increased our endurance by the end of the week.”

Douty produced a winning individual total of 33.5 points, highlighted by her 8.375-scored performance on the balance beam and a tie for top honors on the vault with Arrow teammate Vivian Brockberg at 8.8. Douty also garnered the runner-up spot on floor with a 9.125.

Lingen packed point production for Pipestone by netting runner-up scoring honors overall at 32.925, paced by her narrow victory over MCA’s Schultz on the uneven parallel bars, 7.35-7.325. Lingen also claimed second on the vault (8.725) and second behind the Magic’s Schultz on the floor, 9.2-9.125.

While Schultz captured fourth place in the all-around competition (31.85) behind MCA teammate Abi Chavez, the seventh-grader literally tumbled her way in a positive manner to earn the floor crown with a 9.2. Schultz bookended her three tumbling passes with fulls to highlight her effort.

Schultz displayed her balance and power to claim second on the uneven bars at 7.325 to fend off Chavez’s 7.3-scored performance.

Chavez, who produced a team-leading 31.9 points overall, also reeled off three third-place finishes to serve as the catalyst behind her top-three all-around total.

Chavez utilized front tumbling and a pair of full-capping runs to fuel her third-place floor score of 8.75, while smoothly transitioning from back walk-over to back walk-over on the beam to take third at 7.45.

Mollie Leiding, who pocketed fifth in the all-around at 30.35, claimed fourth on the balance beam with a 7.35 to spearhead her point production for the Magic. Leiding delivered a pair of back handsprings and landed her difficult standing back tuck before experiencing a fall. Leiding also claimed sixth on the floor at 8.35.

Jadyn Montgomery and Ava Thate topped MCA’s effort on the vault by capturing fourth and fifth places, respectively, with marks of 8.575 and 8.5. Both Thate and Montgomery threw one-quarter and one-and-one-quarters off the vault table.

Thate and Schultz added a fifth- and a sixth-place finish on the balance beam with respective totals of 7.3 and 7.025, while seventh-grader Nora Fitzgerald delivered a fifth-place score of 8.4 on the floor exercise.
