Sundeen, Larson help Cardinals salvage tie with Mankato West

MANKATO — The Mankato West Scarlets rallied with a pair of third-period goals to salvage a 4-all tie with the Fairmont Area Cardinals during nonconference girls hockey action on Saturday at All Seasons Arena in Mankato.

Fairmont Area goaltender Hadley Artz turned away all seven of Mankato West’s shots on net during the overtime period to finish with a game-best 45 saves.

Scarlet netminder Alyana Smith prevented four Cardinal shots from finding the twine during the extra session to close with 33 stops on the contest.

Abi Sundeen staked Fairmont Area to a 1-0 lead by converting teammate Addison Folkerts’ assist into the first of her two goals 11:41 into the opening segment.

Lexi Reddy, however, countered for Mankato West by delivering the equalizer in unassisted fashion at the 15:06 mark of the first frame.

Bella Larson then regained a one-goal edge for the Cardinals by cashing in a pass from Hannah Goerndt for a lamp-lighter just 14 seconds into the middle segment.

The Scarlets’ Brooke Ponkrandt answered by converting a double-assist from Shelby Jones and Penny Gorman into a 2-all tie at the 5:42 juncture.

Sundeen restored a lead at 3-2 for Fairmont Area by drilling home a net-finding blast at the 14:52 mark of the second period.

Larson then netted her second goal of the day game by converting Hannah Goerndt’s second helper into a short-handed goal to extend Fairmont Area’s margin to 4-2 just 3:18 into the final frame.

Hope Rademaker cashed in a pass from Reddy at the 4:44 mark to inch the Scarlets within 4-3 before Reddy and Gorman combined passes to find Marleigh Jordan for a power-play goal with only 1:56 remaining in the third frame.

Fairmont Area (1-2-1) travels to Le Sueur on Tuesday night to face Minnesota River in a 7:30 p.m. Big South Conference game.

Mankato West (0-3-1) plays host to Northfield in a 7:15 p.m. game Tuesday night at All Seasons Arena in Mankato.
