Fairmont, Marshall golfers split dual meet

BUFFALO LAKE — The Fairmont girls golf lineup picked up steam down the back nine at Oakdale Golf Course on Friday, while the host Marshall Tigers scratched out a narrow margin of victory over the Cardinals during Big South Conference boys golf action.
Solveig Senf penciled in a medalist 18-hole round of 40-43-83 to pace Fairmont’s 358-393 triumph over Marshall in the girls portion of the final regular-season dual meet near Buffalo Lake.
Senf connected for a team-leading nine pars, while teammates Anika Haugen and Maggy Totzke completed the girls’ 1-2-3 individual sweep, respectively.
Haugen claimed runner-up medalist honors by firing a 43-46-89, including five pars, while Totzke notched a 44-46-90 to pocket third place overall. Totzke sank four pars on the day.
Lauren Davis completed Fairmont’s counting totals on the day by carding a 50-46-96. Davis, who placed fifth overall, produced the Cardinals’ only birdie of the round by sinking her third shot on the par-4 No. 12 hole. Davis also made two pars.
Brynn Gustafson and Bailey Martinson completed the Fairmont girls golfers’ performance on the day. Gustafson tallied a 49-53-102 and Martinson chalked up a 54-53-107. Both Gustafson and Martinson finished with one par.
Grace Ehlers shot a 95 to top the Marshall girls team, while Brooklyn Gossen also broke the century mark with a 97.
Dayton Webskowski and Eryn Kraft rounded out the Tigers’ counting scores by carding a 100 and a 101, respectively.
Taylor Miller (103) and Jaryn Hilgemann (106) capped Marshall’s effort.
In the boys’ competition, Luke Ehlers penciled in a 1-over par round of 73 to pocket meet medalist accolades and steer the Tigers to a narrow 333-342 margin of victory over the Cardinals on Friday.
Evan Franson chipped in a third-place overall total of 82 for Marshall, Jayden Manthei fired a seventh-place 88, while Joey Fossum shared eighth place overall by generating a 90 to complete the counting marks.
Mathew Cone captured runner-up medalist honors for Fairmont by generating a 6-over 78. Cone led the Cardinals’ effort by connecting for birdies on Nos. 3, 4, 6 and 16 to fuel a 38-40. Cone also delivered six pars during his low-scoring round.
Blake Hilgendorf, Alexander Moeller and Jacob Harris each produced rounds of 87 to share fourth-place individual honors for Fairmont.
Hilgendorf dropped home a birdie on No. 3 and made four pars to trigger a 42-45.
Moeller also carded a 42-45, and generated a co-team-best nine pars for the Cardinals.
Harris chipped in a 40-47 by connecting for a birdie on the No. 1 hole, with all five of his pars occurring on the front nine.
Hartley Aust shot a 43-47-90, highlighted by a co-team-best nine pars for the Cardinals, while Niko Flanagan connected for four pars to pace a 45-46-91.
Brock Lutterman chipped in a 46-48-94, including five pars, for Fairmont.
The Fairmont Cardinal girls golf lineup competes in the Section 3AA Tournament starting at 9 a.m. Wednesday back at Oakdale Golf Club near Buffalo Lake.
The Fairmont boys golf team returns to the Oakdale tee boxes at 9 a.m. Thursday for action in the Section 3AA Tournament.
