North Union hoopsters sweep pair from Northwood-Kensett

ARMSTRONG — Sam Nielsen produced a game-best double-double performance to power North Union’s balanced counter-attack against Northwood-Kensett’s full-court pressure Monday night.
The 6-foot Nielsen pounded the low post for 15 points and garnered 11 rebounds to pace the visiting Warriors’ 64-42 victory over the hometown Vikings during Top of Iowa Conference basketball action.
Ironically, Cassie Beadle, who generated eight points and distributed four assists, finally erased the Warriors’ zero on the scoreboard by snapping the nets on the first of her two 3-pointers at the 4-minute juncture of the first quarter.
Clinging to a 6-4 lead, Libby Stevens served as North Union’s instant offense off the bench, erupting for all nine of her points to trigger a momentum-changing 15-0 offensive avalanche that bridged the opening two quarters.
Ahead 21-7, Nielsen later worked the offensive glass to hit a pair of putback baskets to help the Warriors build a 27-12 halftime lead.
Nielsen then accounted for eight of North Union’s 19 third-quarter points and added five boards for good measure during the 8-minute span to help put the game out of reach at 46-27.
Olivia Von Bank delivered nine points and pocketed a game-best six steals for the Warriors, while Lily Henderson contributed eight points and three steals to the winning effort.
Alivia Charlton supplied four points and six rebounds off the bench, Emily Meyer chipped in five points and three steals, while Naomi Jones contributed four steals for North Union.
The Warriors connected on 25 of 50 shots from 2-point range.
North Union (4-1) hits the road to Belmond-Klemme tonight.

Boys Basketball
North Union 62, Northwood-Kensett 48 — The Warriors rallied from a 26-25 halftime deficit to post a 14-point Top of Iowa Conference road win over the Vikings on Monday night.
Danyal Fothergill, who finished with a team-best 14 points, scored six during North Union’s 8-0 game-opening run en route to a 15-7 first-quarter lead.
Jason Hanson, however, countered with 10 of his game-high 16 points to swing the lead to the Vikings before intermission.
Nick Schiltz poured in 11 of his 13 points, while teammates Teagon Fothergill and Logan Odegaard netted eight points apiece to help the Warriors outscore the Vikings 37-22 during the second half to put the game in the win column.
Odegaard finished with 10 points and three steals, Teagon Fothergill closed with eight points — including two 3s, while Schiltz and Danyal Fothergill each pulled down five rebounds.
Kyan Jones tossed in six points, distributed a game-best six assists and pocketed four steals for North Union, while Landon Hagedorn chipped in three steals.
The Warriors made 19 of 36 attempts from 2-point distance for 52.8 percent.
North Union (3-2) makes the trip to Belmond-Klemme tonight.
