Geistfeld finishes 2019 in grand fashion

Wyatt Geistfeld finished a calendar year of athletic success by reaching a grand milestone.

On Dec. 17 in a matchup with the Fairmont Cardinals, the Martin County West senior standout scored the 1,000th point in his varsity basketball career.

Near the end of the first half, Geistfeld powered through two Fairmont defenders for a layup before the game was paused to celebrate the achievement.

Maverick head coach Cliff Anderson presented Geistfeld with a game ball and a banner unfurled through the MCW student section reading, “Congrats on 1,000.”

Geistfeld said he figured he would score his 1,000th point that game, but wasn’t sure when it would happen.

“It was really cool and having all my family (there) was really cool, too. It was exciting.” Geistfeld said. “I knew that I needed around 10 (points), but I didn’t know exactly.”

MCW went on to beat Fairmont 44-39. Geistfeld said going into the matchup felt a little different from other games.

“I was a little nervous because it was 1,000 and it was against Fairmont,” Geistfeld said.

Anderson said getting the individual accolades are nice for Geistfeld, but Anderson said he thinks Geistfeld is focused on something else.

“It’s a great accomplishment and he’s not done yet,” Anderson said. “That’s an individual accomplishment for him and we’re all very proud of him and he’s proud, but he has the team aspect No. 1 on his mind. He’s a great player to have on the team for us and a great player to coach.”

It was a cherry on top of the success Geistfeld saw on the diamond, gridiron and court throughout 2019.

In March, Geistfeld finished his junior basketball season as a co-captain on the Sentinel All-Area basketball team — his third consecutive year making the team. He helped lead the Mavericks to a 16-7 season, while leading the team in all five statistical categories with 398 points scored — 17.3 points per game, along with 197 rebounds, 70 blocks 85 assists and 59 steals.

On May 2, Geistfeld pitched a no-hitter during a Maverick baseball game with Nicollet. Geistfeld struck out seven and allowed three walks in the seven-inning performance. He then earned a spot on the Sentinel All-Area baseball team by hitting for a .436 average with a team-leading 24 hits. He knocked in 17 RBIs, hit five doubles, a triple and two home runs, while stealing six bases.

On the mound, Geistfeld totaled 30 2/3 innings pitched and allowed only 13 runs for a 2.97 ERA. He struck out 26 hitters and earned a 2-1 record.

In the fall, Geistfeld led the MCW football team from his quarterback position to a 7-4 record and the Mavericks’ first appearance in their football section championship game in more than two decades.

Geistfeld was named to the Sentinel All-Area football team after amassing 909 passing yards and 14 touchdowns, while racking up 350 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.

From his defensive back position, Geistfeld intercepted two passes, including a pick-6 in MCW’s Section 3A semifinal win over Wabasso, and made 16 tackles.

His success throughout 2019 made Geistfeld one of the most dynamic athletes in the area.

Anderson said one reason Geistfeld succeeds across different athletics is his drive to be coachable.

“He’s a team leader, he sets the tone for practice every day,” Anderson said. “Every day he works harder in practice and just keeps being that team leader and wanting to be a coachable guy.”

So far this season, Geistfeld has amassed 162 points in MCW’s first nine games.

He’s scored at least 20 points in four of nine games and has produced three double-double showings. Geistfeld put up 14 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in a 48-45 win over Blue Earth Area on Dec. 10, scored 32 points and brought down 10 boards, while nearing a quadruple-double with eight assists and six steals in an opening-round 70-52 win over Norwood-Young America in the Norwood-Young America Invitational.

He then helped lead the Mavericks to the invitational crown with 15 points, 10 rebounds, nine assists and three steals in a 61-56 win over Paynesville Area the next day. He also added a 14-point, seven-assist and five-steal performance Thursday against Edgerton.

The Mavericks have lost only one of their first nine games this season and Geistfeld has scored at least 13 points in every game.

As he continues to lead the team as a senior, he said he hasn’t made an official decision as to what comes next, but he will likely continue his basketball, and possibly baseball, career in college.
