Fitzgerald, Steuber hit century mark
Two more have joined a long list of Martin County Red Bull wrestlers to reach 100 career wins.
Both Cale Steuber and Class AA No. 3-ranked 160-pounder Miles Fitzgerald joined current teammates Jaxson Rohman, Connor Simmonds, Payton Anderson and Lucas Jagodzinske in reaching the century mark.
Steuber produced his 100th win with a pin of Waseca’s 152-pounder Christian Rodriguez in 49 seconds during triangular action on Dec. 10 at Cardinal Gym in Fairmont. On the same night, Fitzgerald pinned Waseca’s 182-pounder Buck Kuhns in 59 seconds to earn his 100th career victory.
Both achievements were acknowledged in the gymnasium, giving each wrestler a moment to take in.
“I was pretty excited, but I already knew it was coming,” Steuber said. “It would have been better if I didn’t know, but it was still pretty cool.”
“I didn’t really even hear it (announced),” Fitzgerald said. “The coaches came and gave me high fives and said congratulations.”
The pair have combined to help the No. 3-ranked Red Bulls to a 3-0 dual-meet start to their season after a 67-12 win over Redwood Valley, a 64-8 win over Waseca and a 52-21 win over Class A No. 4-ranked Blue Earth Area.
Fitzgerald and Steuber also helped the Red Bulls win the Dick Maher Invitational crown to begin the 2019-20 season on Dec. 7 in Blue Earth.
Fitzgerald took gold at 160 pounds, while Steuber claimed bronze at 145.
Both have been key parts of the Red Bulls’ success the past two seasons, wrestling as members of the second-place state team in 2018, then going to state as individuals last season.
Fairmont, Martin County West and Granada-Huntley-East Chain school districts comprise the Red Bulls program.
As well as going to the state tournament with the team in 2018, Fitzgerald also placed sixth at 145 pounds two seasons ago.
“The team part of it was definitely 10 times more fun than the individual part,” Fitzgerald said.
He then went back to the state tournament as a 152-pounder last season and finished fourth.
“It was pretty cool,” Fitzgerald said of improving his position. “I was still a little short of where I wanted to be.”
Fitzgerald said after improving from sixth to fourth last season, he has a very specific goal for this season.
“State title,” Fitzgerald said.
Steuber helped the Red Bulls’ second-place finish in 2018, then went to the individual tournament in the 132-pound bracket, ending after a loss in the first round.
“That was a lot of fun bringing the whole team up there,” Steuber said of his 2018 experience. “We got second, so it was a fun ride.
“It’s not as fun going as an individual. It’s a lot more fun with the team because all your friends are up there with you.”
Along with his teammates, Steuber joins older brother Collin Steuber with 100 career wins. Cale said he’s modeled his wrestling style after Collin, who Cale said is his role model on the mat. Cale said Collin taught him most of his moves.
Those moves will be key to Cale Steuber achieving his goals for this season.
“I’m looking to make it to state and make it on the podium,” Steuber said in reference to a top-six finish. “And get the team there.”
Off the mat, both Fitzgerald and Steuber spend time preparing for wrestling, whether its going to wrestling camps during the summer or working out and playing football, which both agreed is a big help for wrestling.
Fitzgerald said he spent this summer in the weight room and working on football to help improve the Martin County West Mavericks’ football team.
Fitzgerald’s work through the offseason helped the Mavericks go from a 1-8 season and an exit after the first round of the Section 3AA playoffs to a 7-4 season and an appearance in the Section 3A championship game. It was the first time the Mavericks made it to their section championship in more than two decades.
Steuber said he attended wrestling camps on his own and the Luther College camp that the Red Bulls attended as a team.
He also helped lead the Fairmont Cardinals football team to an 8-2 season and the Cardinals’ fifth consecutive appearance in the Section 3AAA championship game.
Steuber and Fitzgerald will look to continue their success on the mat during the Rumble on the Red tournament in Fargo, N.D., next weekend.
