Waterville ends Martins’ state run

DELANO — The Waterville Indians edged the Fairmont Martins, 3-2, during the Minnesota Class C state amateur baseball tournament’s Round of 16 play Friday night.

The Martins ended the season with a 26-8 overall record.

Waterville advances to face Hutchinson in an 11 a.m. state quarterfinal Sunday in Maple Lake.

North Union claims football opener

ARMSTRONG — The North Union Warriors kicked off the Iowa Class A football campaign with a 26-6 triumph over Central Springs on Friday night in Armstrong.

No team or individual statistics were reported on the game.

North Union (1-0) travels to Fort Dodge, Iowa, next Friday night for a District 3 game against St. Edmond.

Fairmont C-squad grid drops opener

FAIRMONT — Marshall edged Fairmont, 15-6, during season-opening C-squad football action Thursday.

Owen Burmeister returned a kickoff 85 yards to account for Fairmont’s only points of the game.

David Maakestad rushed for a team-best 60 yards for Fairmont, while Trey Tumbleson made three catches for 15 yards.

Brock Lutterman recovered a fumble to top Fairmont’s defensive effort.

North Union runs in invite

ARMSTRONG — Nick Schiltz topped the North Union boys team, while Cassie Beadle set the pace for the Warrior girls lineup during the Spencer cross country invitational on Thursday.

Schiltz placed 38th overall by running a 5,000-meter time of 19:24, while teammates Gage Madden (20:41) and Trevor Kruse (21:46) finished 58th and 66th individually, respectively.

Beadle crossed the finish line with a time of 25:16 to net 54th place, while teammates Hanna Sandvig (25:47) and Jordyn Cummins (26:11) captured 61st and 64th place, respectively.

North Union runs at Okoboji, Iowa, at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5.
