Time for common sense To the Editor: On April 2, the Minnesota House Democratic majority unveiled its comprehensive transportation funding proposal for the next two years. Much like Gov. Tim Walz, House Democrats want to raise the gas tax by at least 20 cents per gallon. That’s unacceptable. The people I represent, we drive a lot of miles. A 20-cent per gallon gas tax increase will result in a lot of money unnecessarily taken from them at the end of the year. I’m totally against a gas tax increase of this magnitude. Class of ’57 ready for fun To the Editor: Attention citizens, members of the Fairmont High School class of 1957 are 80 years old and we are celebrating. We have lots of memories but we forgot a bunch of them, so if you see us around town please mention that the party will be held at Cedar Creek Park. Bill would aid veterans To the Editor: Legislation I am sponsoring to assist disabled or unemployed veterans by providing a tax credit to employers who hire them will be included in a comprehensive veterans proposal this session. This gives employers an incentive to hire those people who got injured serving our country during combat. My bill states the maximum credit for hiring a disabled veteran would be 10 percent of the wages paid, up to $3,000; and the maximum credit allowed for hiring an unemployed veteran is 10 percent of the wages paid, up to $1,500, during the taxable ...

Focus on business To the Editor: My name is Polly Mosloski and I am losing my job. I have worked at Payless Shoes in Fairmont for 15 years. There are about 40 other people losing their jobs. They work at Shopko. We have already lost the people who worked in the store pharmacy. We are sad and don’t know what we are going to do. Worthless proposal To the Editor: A March 13 Sentinel editorial stated: “It’s not even clear [Minnesota Gov. Tim] Walz’s plan would do any good in reducing ‘global warming.’” That’s an understatement. Man’s greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions of carbon dioxide are insignificant when stacked up against Mother Nature’s reservoir of CO2 contained in the sea, air and land. The ratio is 2,400 to 1.
