To the editor: Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of U.S. Rep. Jim Hagedorn, who died Thursday at 59 after a long battle with kidney cancer. Hagedorn was a strong supporter of veterans. Perhaps his biggest accomplishment for veterans went without much fanfare. He worked with the Mayo Clinic to get it to sign on with the VA Care in the Community Act. Many residents in the 1st District have no other options for health care than the Mayo’s system of hospitals and clinics, and Mayo participating reduces veteran drive times. Community Center input To the Editor: Don’t build it. It will be a belly flop like the Aquatic Park. Ask yourself, do you really want to waste your money on something that only certain people will use or benefit from? If so, then those people should pay for it and all the money needed for future maintenance and all expenditures. The people of the community deserve better treatment. As a taxpayer, I do not want extra sales tax, real estate tax and public utility bill increases to fund your projects. I’m sure other taxpayers feel the same way. Is there public support for proposed community center? To the Editor: We understand that the proposed community center is expected to cost over $30 million. How are we going to pay such a sum? Who is going to use it? How will the Center be utilized during the day while most adults work and the kids are in school? In addition, the committee talks about hiring an architect when they do not yet know what they really want to build. Nor do they know the true level of public support for the project. Long-term care agencies help To the Editor: I appreciated the Friday, Feb. 4th editorial in which good suggestions were stated for using the state budget surplus. As told in the article, it is difficult for long-term care agencies. They must compete for staffing and the pay levels are dependent on state funding and they cannot pay workers as much. Be careful with vaccinations To the Editor: With a heavy heart, I write this letter. I am a Vietnam Veteran, a retired business owner of the community, a father, grandfather, and a proud supporter of our country. I love my country and would give my life for her. I served in the U.S. Army from 1963-1966 during which I was in Vietnam from 1965-1966 as an aircraft mechanic. You can help feed the world To the Editor: We all know that our world is faced with a serious hunger problem, at home and abroad. But what can we do? It probably takes a lot of money to make the meals for the needy, I would have to spend so much time packing all the food, and it’s impossible to send the meals overseas. Right? Think again. Our local Kids Against Hunger Committee works diligently to truly make a difference. It only takes 23 cents to pack a meal that provides all the nutrition needed for the entire day.
