Addressing YMCA misinformation To the Editor: We continue to be amazed by the amount of misinformation about the YMCA that continues to be published in this papers’ Letter to the Editor section. We agree 100 percent that people are entitled to their opinions but it truly saddens/disappoints us that even after the building of this facility has been passed by vote, people continue to try and reverse the situation. Hockey is thankful To the Editor: It’s that time of the year where winter sports are winding down and I wanted to say congratulations to the teams that advanced to the regional youth hockey tournaments this week. First, I want to say thank you to all our volunteers, parents, coaches, arena staff, CER and board members. Fantastic Support To the Editor: What a fantastic turn out and support we had for our 8th annual Coaches vs. Cancer event. A huge thank you to our basketball players, dancers, coaches, their families, the Fairmont community, our local businesses, the away basketball team from Blue Earth and many others that helped us with this event. We had 56 local businesses and families donate raffle items, 271 basketballs purchased, collected $963 from half time, $1,432 from raffles, $810 in donations, totaling $5,915. Seek feedback on community center To the Editor: I recently read an article in the Sentinel (Feb. 10, 2022), about the Community Center Advisory Board (CCAB) meeting with Tegra, the city’s owner representative for the proposed Fairmont Area Community Center. Tegra stated that they have seen a shift in communities since COVID-19 in regard to how people view a community center. Their suggestion to survey the people of Fairmont to verify what they want is reasonable. To the editor: Our heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of U.S. Rep. Jim Hagedorn, who died Thursday at 59 after a long battle with kidney cancer. Hagedorn was a strong supporter of veterans. Perhaps his biggest accomplishment for veterans went without much fanfare. He worked with the Mayo Clinic to get it to sign on with the VA Care in the Community Act. Many residents in the 1st District have no other options for health care than the Mayo’s system of hospitals and clinics, and Mayo participating reduces veteran drive times. Community Center input To the Editor: Don’t build it. It will be a belly flop like the Aquatic Park. Ask yourself, do you really want to waste your money on something that only certain people will use or benefit from? If so, then those people should pay for it and all the money needed for future maintenance and all expenditures. The people of the community deserve better treatment.
