St. John Vianney School raises $16,550 in just six weeks To the Editor: 2022 brought another successful Catholic Schools Raffle at St. John Vianney Catholic School. Teachers, staff and the surrounding community of Fairmont united with students and their families to raise an outstanding total of $16,550 for the school. Since Jan. 14, students of St. John Vianney Catholic School have been selling $5 raffle tickets as part of the Catholic Schools Raffle, a fundraising program provided free of charge by sponsor Catholic United Financial since 2009. Remember the abandoned pool? To the Editor: In 1969, citizens of Fairmont voted for a new indoor swimming pool. It was the 3rd largest pool in the state. Racing lanes ran width-wise rather than length-wise. It was located at the Middle School (now Fairmont Elementary School). Where is it now? Filled with concrete and used as a gymnasium. Why? Lack of use by the school district as a phy-ed station and by the general public. And because of enormous up-keep cost/repairs and ongoing energy cost, the City of Fairmont and the Fairmont School District decided to abandon the indoor pool. Why ...

Martin County Youth Foundation To the Editor: On behalf of the Red Rock Center for the Arts, I would like to thank you for all you do to support area youth. With so many changes over the last couple of years, youth activities at the Red Rock have remained strong. We were able to host outdoor summer camps, children’s theatre, art and music classes, open studio days, family fun days, and so much more. Diabetes prevention: Weighty idea To the Editor: Benjamin Franklin once said “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure…” and Medicare has adopted this “weighty” idea. Medicare covers preventative services at 100 percent to prevent and/or detect diseases early when they are most easily treated. Diabetes is one such disease. According to the American Diabetes Association, in 2020, approximately 358,000 Minnesotans were diagnosed with diabetes, and an additional 118,000 people had diabetes but did not know it. Take a new poll on community center To the Editor: I agree totally with the previous letters to the editor regarding needing another vote before proceeding with the community center. I believe that there should be a new poll taken from the property taxpayers of the City of Fairmont to see if there is still support for the proposed 30 plus million dollar community center. I was told that the actual cost of the proposed community center has now most likely more than doubled from what was originally estimated.
