Report scams on the elderly To the Editor: This letter is about scams directed towards older population. It was from a company called, “Exact Sciences Corporation” out of Madison, Wis. In it was a few items for “Colonguard.” The official looking directions ask to me to immediately give a stool sample and return to Exact Sciences within 24 hours for testing for cancer. But, I had not ordered any testing. So I called the Colonguard 800 number. I asked what doctor ordered the test. “No problem sir. I just need your name and birthday.” I said no, told them this is a scam ...

Opportunity to redo the action To the Editor: Fairmont City Council member Miller stated according to the Sentinel that Marshall, New Ulm and St. Peter, which all have community centers and colleges and which she said haven’t grown in population. When I check population trends of the mentioned cities, this is what I find: New Ulm is growing at a rate of 0.42 percent annually and its population has increased by 0.85 percent since the most recent census; St. Peter is growing at a rate of 0.72 percent annually and its population has increased by 1.44 percent since the most recent ...

Perfect storm against the Fairmont Area Community Center To the Editor: The article in the Sentinel on Saturday, Dec. 2 about taxes going up on residential properties brings to mind what the tax impact for the full Fairmont Area Community Center (FACC) would be on our residential taxes? I have been following the back and forth of pros and cons on the issue. Something I haven’t seen was a projection or estimate of what the cost of building and maintaining the full FACC would be on local property taxes. A vote with no explanation To the Editor: How sad it is to know that 3 members of our city council, with no explanations for their vote, can strike down the hard work of a group of people with a vision to help Fairmont grow. The proposed Community Center/YMCA would have been a facility for all people young and old to utilize year around if they chose to do so. Yes, Fairmont has 5 lakes, lots of parks, an aquatic park, etc., but most of these amenities can only be utilized in the summer months.
