Grateful for park department’s response To the Editor: The dog park in Fairmont provides a great place for our four-legged pals to exercise, socialize, play and have fun. So when the holes our digger friends made became so large and deep that it became a safety issue, I brought my concerns to the attention of the Fairmont Park Department. The very next day, the maintenance crew was out filling in those holes. They also removed some broken furniture, repaired the platform at the water station and brought in loads of wood chips. Be informed of options in case of gas leak To the Editor: I am writing this letter to the general public so that they may be aware of a situation that is happening in the Fairmont community. I recently returned home from a major surgery, so was not moving around very much yet. On Sunday, June 30, my wife and I detected a slight smell of a natural gas leak in our home. I knew there was a 24-hour emergency number to call if you smelled gas. I was unable to locate it in the phone book, etc., so I decided to call 911 to ask the emergency operator for the emergency number. She said she ...

Huge thank you to CHS Inc. To the Editor: Eleven amazing men and one little princess showed up to volunteer their time trimming at Lakeside Cemetery. Their timing could not have been more perfect. With the flooding rains, wind damage, trees down and grass that never seems to to let up, it’s been a challenge to keep up. They arrived with pickups, trimmers roaring, tons of muscle, high energy and generous hearts. CHS Inc. allows their employees to volunteer time in the community. So glad they picked us. This difficult decision has been made due to budget cuts and the increasingly unsustainable costs associated with maintaining the aging equipment. Preserve Lakeside Cemetery as a resource To the Editor: Recently, I had need to be considering the “final resting places” of a number of my relatives, beginning with my paternal great-grandparents, John F. and Rebecca L. Palmer, who homesteaded in Pleasant Prairie in 1882, later living, and dying, in Fairmont; but also the final resting places for my paternal grandparents, my parents, four uncles and aunts, other more distant relatives, and my sister, buried since 2003, all in Lakeside Cemetery. Grateful for Fairmont Knights of Columbus To the Editor: On behalf of the CREST Board of Directors and staff, we would like to thank the Fairmont Knights of Columbus Council 1575 for their generosity to the CREST organization in presenting us with a check for $5,000 recently. These funds were part of the proceeds from the 32nd annual K-C Silent/Live Auction that was held on April 6. The funds will be used to continue the work of CREST in Martin County.
