It’s me, I’m the problem To the Editor: I attended the Fairmont City Council meeting on Sept. 23. The Fairmont Area Community Center Foundation gave an update on the Community Center (CC) progress. They were projecting a very positive attitude about the progress over the 8 years since the vote on the .5 percent tax increase. Then they described why the progress has been going so slowly. Trump is the only choice To the Editor: It is difficult to figure out why millions of Americans think Kamala Harris is capable to run this country. As a Senator from California, she was the most liberal member even beating out self-proclaimed Socialist Bernie Sanders. As Vice President, she was appointed the Border Czar. How did that work out? Higher gas prices in Fairmont To the Editor: I went to Mankato on Saturday, Sept 21. Holiday and Casey’s gas stations in Madelia posted prices of $3.09 for unleaded and $3.37 for diesel. They are 20 cents cheaper than Fairmont. Why? My gas tank was half full on the way back home, but I stopped and got gas anyway. Seven gallons = $1.40 saved. I drive from Lewisville to Fairmont Monday-Friday to work. Round trip for me is 50 miles. Every penny I can save on gas is important to me. Is there some kind of secret group that decides what the prices should be in Fairmont? If so, this is ...

Preserve Truman Police Department To the editor: For well over a year, negotiations have been ongoing between the Truman City Council/Mayor Jake Ebert and Interim Police Chief Mike Schutz to come to an agreement regarding a contract for Officer Schutz for the position of Truman Police Chief. The talks seemed to have slowed so the City Council investigated the option of discontinuing the City of Truman Police Department altogether and signing a contract with the Martin County Sheriff’s Department to provide 40 hours of protection to the community per week. Vote no on sales tax increase To the Editor: Here we go again. On the November ballot, the city of Fairmont is asking us to approve yet another half-cent sales tax increase. This is yet another local sales tax for the supposed ice rink and community center, which if ever built, will be Fairmont’s newest white elephant. And the Fairmont sales tax is already too high. In our representative form of government, we have few opportunities to have a direct say in our taxation, But, in this case, you have the opportunity to tell the City Council that enough is enough. To the Editor: With the help of the Fairmont Knights of Columbus, Arc and Martin County People First, these organizations were able to donate money to the fair board to have a Disability Day at the Martin County Fair this year. This event was sponsored by the Fairmont Human Rights Committee, People First of Martin County and the Martin County Fair board. It was a successful day enjoyed by many individuals with disabilities which would not have been possible without the Knights having their annual silent/live auction.
