Vote no on sales tax increase To the Editor: Here we go again. On the November ballot, the city of Fairmont is asking us to approve yet another half-cent sales tax increase. This is yet another local sales tax for the supposed ice rink and community center, which if ever built, will be Fairmont’s newest white elephant. And the Fairmont sales tax is already too high. In our representative form of government, we have few opportunities to have a direct say in our taxation, But, in this case, you have the opportunity to tell the City Council that enough is enough. To the Editor: With the help of the Fairmont Knights of Columbus, Arc and Martin County People First, these organizations were able to donate money to the fair board to have a Disability Day at the Martin County Fair this year. This event was sponsored by the Fairmont Human Rights Committee, People First of Martin County and the Martin County Fair board. It was a successful day enjoyed by many individuals with disabilities which would not have been possible without the Knights having their annual silent/live auction. Grateful for park department’s response To the Editor: The dog park in Fairmont provides a great place for our four-legged pals to exercise, socialize, play and have fun. So when the holes our digger friends made became so large and deep that it became a safety issue, I brought my concerns to the attention of the Fairmont Park Department. The very next day, the maintenance crew was out filling in those holes. They also removed some broken furniture, repaired the platform at the water station and brought in loads of wood chips. Be informed of options in case of gas leak To the Editor: I am writing this letter to the general public so that they may be aware of a situation that is happening in the Fairmont community. I recently returned home from a major surgery, so was not moving around very much yet. On Sunday, June 30, my wife and I detected a slight smell of a natural gas leak in our home. I knew there was a 24-hour emergency number to call if you smelled gas. I was unable to locate it in the phone book, etc., so I decided to call 911 to ask the emergency operator for the emergency number. She said she ...

Huge thank you to CHS Inc. To the Editor: Eleven amazing men and one little princess showed up to volunteer their time trimming at Lakeside Cemetery. Their timing could not have been more perfect. With the flooding rains, wind damage, trees down and grass that never seems to to let up, it’s been a challenge to keep up. They arrived with pickups, trimmers roaring, tons of muscle, high energy and generous hearts. CHS Inc. allows their employees to volunteer time in the community. So glad they picked us.
