Volunteers needed for lake cleanup

To the Editor:

Fairmont Lakes Foundation, Inc. continues to exercise its stewardship responsibilities for the Fairmont Chain of Lakes in announcing a cleanup of Budd Lake, scheduled for 8-11 a.m. June 17.

We are calling on concerned volunteers to bring their kayaks, canoes, boats, pontoons and/or waders to assist with the cleanup. We will meet at Gomsrud Park and disperse. The city of Fairmont will provide a truck to assist volunteers with trash removal from the drop-off site at Gomsrud Park.

Thank you, in advance, for any support you may offer in making this project a success.

Michael J. Katzenmeyer, chairman

Help with fishing contest appreciated

To the Editor:

Last Saturday, June 3, the “KIDS All American Fishing and Casting Contest” took place at Gomsrud Park here in Fairmont. It was a beautiful morning for fishing.

Our thanks to all the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and neighborhood friends for bringing out their kids to spend time together while their son, daughter, grandson, granddaughter, niece or nephew participated in the fishing derby. This time spent together with a child is the big payoff to being parent, grandparent or aunt and uncle, but also for being their mentor and friend.

Of course, an event like this could not have happened without the generous donations and wonderful prizes supplied by community-minded businesses.

There were 52 contestants with more than 100 in attendance including adults. 124 fish were caught.

This event happens every year at this time (first Saturday in June) with the Bass Seekers of Fairmont and the Kiwanis Early Risers coordinating their efforts to put on this fun-packed event. Thanks to all the helpers from the Bass Seekers, Kiwanis Early Risers, Sentinel and Photo Press, as well as all the sponsors for making this a huge success.

Dennis Trushenski,

Kiwanis Early Risers

Time given to honor our veterans

To the Editor:

On behalf of Fairmont American Legion Post 36 and the VFW Post 1222, I would like to thank those many Martin County residents who volunteered 1 1/2 hours of their time during the Memorial Day weekend to help place and also remove the 1.097 flags on the gravesites of Martin County veterans buried at Lakeside Cemetery in Fairmont. A bit of individual time was given to show honor and respect for those who gave a lot of their time for all of us. Thank you.

Ernie Nuss,

Memorial Day flag committee
