Darliss Jane (Werner) Green was born Aug. 1, 1935, on the Gilfillan Family Farm near Morgan, Minn., the daughter of Fred A. and Eleanora (Ludwig) Werner. As a young girl, Darliss attended country school through the third grade. She then transitioned to parochial school before attending Morgan High School her freshman and sophomore years. Darliss then attended Echo High School in Echo, Minn., and received her diploma.

On April 16, 1955, Darliss was united in marriage to Melvin Green in Vesta, Minn. The couple moved to Granada, Minn., where they were blessed with three children, Kathy, Randy, and Ronald.

Darliss and Melvin owned and operated Green’s Locker and the Standard Gas Station in Granada, Minn., for many years prior to their divorce in 1977. In 1985, Darliss began driving bus for the school and continued driving for over 45 years before retiring in 2020. Darliss also worked as a rural mail carrier for many years, making sure those on her route received their mail in a timely manner. Her passion for her community led her to run for City Council serving as a member from 1997 to 2006. In 2007, Darliss was elected as mayor of Granada and continued in that roll until 2015.

Darliss was an extrovert that loved socializing and spending time with family and friends. She could often be found in her favorite seat at the bar, laughing and sharing stories with a cold beer and was always willing to try her luck playing pull tabs with her granddaughter. She was an avid Minnesota Sports fan and cheered on the Vikings and Timberwolves in their victories and agonized with all the other fans in their defeats. In 2025, Darliss reached the age of 90 and a celebration was held for her. The attendance of all her friends and family warmed her heart and she shared how special it was to her often.

Darliss loved to travel and for many years, looked forward to making her annual trek to California to spend the month of August with her son. A special trip she also took was to New Jersey to see a grandson with her daughter, Kathy. In her quiet time, Darliss could be found reading.
