Darrel Dean Anderson was born May 26, 1934, in Estherville, Iowa, son of Math and Ida (Johnson) Anderson. He grew up on the family farm by Dunnell, Minn. and attended country school. He graduated in 1952 from Sherburn High School where he participated in band and several sports. He attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. Darrel was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Marilyn Martens of Sherburn, Minn. on Jan. 28, 1955, in Sherburn. They were blessed with four children: Craig, Lori, Douglas and Scott. Through the years the couple lived in Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan, Wisconsin and settled in Sioux Falls in 1966. Darrel was a State Farm agent in Sioux Falls for nearly 30 years, regularly qualifying for company sales honors, including the President’s Club. He was known as a man of integrity and was widely trusted by his clients and friends in the insurance industry. He served as local and state president of the Life Underwriters Association and was chosen Life Underwriter of the Year in 1984. He also served as a classroom lecturer on insurance at local high schools and colleges. During his career, he was active with the Cosmopolitan Club, Red Cross, Augustana Fellows and Toastmasters International. He was particularly active in his church as a member of the church council, the SD Support to the Ministries Committee, and teaching Sunday School for many years. Darrel later became a member of First Evangelical Free Church. His greatest desire was to have his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren know how proud he was of them and that they know Jesus Christ as their Savior and Lord. He found great joy spending time with family at the lake, boating, playing billiards, traveling, reading and listening to music. Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Lori (Curt) Sorenson, and three sons, Craig (Barbara) Anderson, Douglas (Bonnie) Anderson and Scott (Kyle) Anderson; 11 grandchildren, Jared (Jen) Sorenson, Eric Sorenson, Richard (Ashley) Sorenson, Maren (Mike) Berven, Mathew (Nicole) Anderson, Mark Anderson, Kyle (Katie) Anderson, Katie (John) Heimann, Justin (Courtney) Anderson, Megan (Casey) Finnicum, Isaac (Abby) Anderson; and 18 great-grandchildren, Eden Sorenson, Sydney and Ali Sorenson, Andrew, Elizabeth, Thomas, Rachel, Justin, Angela, James and Katherine Berven, Felicity Anderson, Grace and Natalie Anderson, Logan and Austin Heimann, and Luke and Ava Finnicum. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn Anderson; parents, Math and Ida Anderson; two sisters, Elsie Cash and Velma Bredberg; four brothers, Floyd, Maynard, Wayne and Donald Anderson. We have been abundantly blessed by and through the life of Darrel – father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. We ask that any desired memorials be directed to Ava’s House Hospice, 1320 W. 17th Street, Sioux Falls, SD 57104 in appreciation of their tender loving care of Darrel and his wife, Marilyn.
