Kathleen F. Dettmer Skelly

WELCOME — A Celebration of Life Service for Kathleen F. Dettmer Skelly, 76, of Welcome, Minn. will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021 at Kramer Family Funeral Home Chapel in Welcome, Minn. Burial will be in the Welcome City Cemetery in Welcome, Minn. Kathy was called to her eternal rest Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2021 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Fairmont, Minn. with her daughter, Dana, holding her hand.

Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday until the time of the services at the funeral home in Welcome. Messages of Sympathy may be sent to the family online at www.kramerfuneralhome.com. Kathy’s service will be recorded and placed on her obituary page on Kramer Family Funeral Home Website.

She was born October 27, 1944 in Merced, Calif. Kathy met Derry D. Dettmer while he was stationed at Castle Air Force Base in the neighboring town of Atwater, Calif. They were united in marriage on Oct. 6, 1962 in Merced, Calif & she became Kathleen Dettmer. Kathy gave birth to Lisa Renae Dettmer (Wimbley) on April 23, 1963 in Merced, Calif & nine years later to a son, that will remain unnamed. Kathy worked for the Merced Community College and Probation department before moving to Derry’s hometown of Trimont, Minn. in 1976. Kathy was always a hard worker & this city girl raised hogs for several years on an acreage outside of Fairmont. Their daughter Dana (Jeff) Reinders was born during this time on Oct. 31, 1979. Kathy began her Bachelor’s Degree at Mankato State University when she was 48 years old & continued to complete a Master’s Degree in Social Work. She began her teaching career at MSU but became a full time Professor at Iowa Lakes Community College in Emmetsburg/Estherville locations. Kathy gained the Skelly in her name on Dec. 30, 1996 when she wed Dennis M. Skelly at the 4 Columns Inn outside Sherburn, Minn. They reside in Welcome, Minn. to this day. Kathy & Dennis hosted many loved Foreign Exchange students over the years. She retired from classroom teaching in 2009 & online courses in 2014. Kathy loved to express her love in cooking & hosting family gatherings. She was also an avid gardener, antique hunter & cat lover. She would give you the shirt off of her back while listening to your story.

Kathy is preceded in death by her mother, Fern D. Strohl; Father, Augustus Buser; Brother, Clyde Strohl; Sister, Delores Hockaday; Brother Augustin Morley; Brother in-law Glen Hockaday; Nephew/Brother in-law, David Fournier; Nephew, Clyde David Strohl; Nephew, Chad Strohl, Derry Dettmer; Father in-law, Logan C. Dettmer; Mother In-law, Hazel Dettmer & Granddaughter Aleia Kathleen Dettmer.

Her Husband Dennis & two daughters are left to cherish her memory along with her Grandchildren Kelvin (Sharon) Bahr, Drew (Tom) De Jong, Sophia Reinders, & Miles Reinders, her dear Sister-Niece Claudia Fournier, & half Brother Ron Morley, Daughter In-Law Rhonda (Mike) Bulick along with several extended family in California & New York.
