Area roundup: St. James Area tennis bests Fairmont

SJA 6, FAIRMONT 1
FAIRMONT – The St. James Area tennis team took six matches during Tuesday afternoon’s contest against Fairmont. The Saints won all four singles matches and took two doubles matches. Lilly Ortega and Hudson Clayton took down Dylan Vite and Noah Sauer in their doubles match. After dropping the first set 0-6, the Cardinals won the next two 6-4 and 11-9 to secure the victory. Parker Olsen and Leander Nelson also had a three-set match, but ultimately fell to Steffan Wegner and Felo Panjoy, 4-6, 6-4, 9-11.
Fairmont returns to the courts next Tuesday at Luverne. The competition is set to begin at 4:30 p.m.
PREP SOFTBALL
MCW 7, SESM 0
SLEEPY EYE – Maddie Carlson and Sydney Clow combined for a three-hit shutout against Sleepy Eye Saint Mary’s on Tuesday afternoon, helping Martin County West win the contest 7-0 to earn its 13th win of the spring. Carlson went the opening six innings and allowed just two hits while fanning four batters. Clow closed things out and picked up two strikeouts herself.
Courtney Anderson went 3-4 from the plate with two RBIs. Emily Schettler had two hits herself, one of which was a double, and finished with one RBI. Ivy Olson picked up two hits, while Lillie Schultz had one. Rowan Faber knocked a double.
The Mavericks (13-1) will take on Madelia this Friday at 4:30 p.m.
PREP BASEBALL
FAIRMONT 26, BEA 3
BLUE EARTH – The Fairmont Cardinals scored 14 runs in the second inning to propel a 26-3 victory past Blue Earth Area on Tuesday afternoon. Fairmont is now 9-4 on the season and has won eight of its past 10 contests.
Joey Crissinger had five RBIs on the day and finished with four hits, one of which was a double. Fairmont finished with 21 hits on the afternoon, with 11 players recording a base knock. Mac Larson tossed the opening three innings for the Cardinals and allowed one earned run while striking out four. Brayden Williamson and Nolyn Goerndt threw one each to close the game.
The Cardinals will play a doubleheader this Friday against Pipestone Area at Herb Wolf Field. The first game starts at 4:00 p.m.
PREP TRACK AND FIELD
ST. PETER – The Fairmont boys and girls track and field teams competed in the 2AA Section True Team competition held at Floyd B. Johnson Field at St. Peter High School on Monday afternoon. Both teams placed third as of Tuesday night. The boys got 329, while the girls got 344.5. Results from the pole vault are still pending.
Fairmont head coach Jesse Walters had three school records set on Monday. Addison Toothaker is now 10th all-time in the 100-meter sprint time after finishing with a 13.16. Kaylee Kloeckner’s 37’1″ in shot put placed her 10th in the program. Finally, Ellie Perkins is now seventh in triple jump with a distance of 34’10”.
For the boys, Dakota Wiley placed second in the 400-meter sprint behind Worthington’s Austin Kinser. Wiley finished with a time of 52.55. Carter Hanson had a great day in the distance events. He finished second and third in the 800-meter and 1600-meter races, with times of 2:07.10 and 4:42.60, respectively. His effort in the 1600 was a season best. Cole Hanson continued the strong showing in long distance after placing second in the 3200, behind Alexander Bur from St. Peter, with a personal best time of 10:15.55. The boys’ 4 by 400 and 4 by 800 meter relay teams finished second, both times behind Marshall. Tytan Tumbleson got second on his performance in the high jump, reaching six feet.
The girls’ 4 by 100 and 4 by 400 meter relay teams both finished second. Nathaliah Johnson, Jadyn Montgomery, Madi Thompson and Emelia Klanderud led the charge in the 100, getting a time of 53.49, and losing to Jordan. Perkins, Thompson, Harlee Fastnacht and Toothaker were the runners in the 400, finishing with a 4:15.47 behind St. Peter. Kloeckner’s personal best toss in shot put had enough distance to clear Addie Campion from Jordan. Like most of the season, teammate Addison Folkerts matched in the discus, getting a first-place finish after her toss of 103′ 5″ went further than Jordan’s Sophia Hagen.
