MAPLE GROVE — Janice Mae Nelson, formerly of Fairmont, died peacefully Sunday, Feb. 23, 2020, at Our Lady of Peace in St. Paul. A memorial service will be held noon Saturday, Feb. 29, 2020, in the chapel at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont, with visitation beginning at 10:30 a.m. Cake and coffee to follow service. In honor of Jan’s love for sports, we welcome you to wear your favorite team gear or colors, no green/yellow please. Inurnment will be at a later date.

She was born May 23, 1936, in Granada Minn., to Harris and Clara (Johnson) Hanson. She attended Granada High School, where she was a cheerleader and had a graduating class of 15 in 1954. After high school, Jan attended Gustavus College and Mankato Commercial.

On Sept. 22, 1956, Jan was united in marriage to Leland Nelson.

She worked for Railway Motors as a bookkeeper for 32 years, was an office secretary for Grace Lutheran Church, and was a building caretaker with Leland at seven different locations in the Twin Cities over a span of 20 years.

Jan was an avid baker who also loved to cook. She enjoyed playing cards with friends, especially a game of 500 and rooting for any Minnesota sports team. She always portrayed a positive outlook, was very kind and giving to those around her.

She is survived by her husband, Leland; daughter, Cynthia Lee Sullivan; three grandchildren, Brandon (Rachel) Tonneson, Brittni Sullivan, and Ben (Jalisa) Sullivan, one great-grandchild, Tyson Tonneson; sisters-in-law, Carol Peterson, Pat Hanson, and Donna Stenzel; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Jim, Elwood, Russ, Harvey and Gene.
