Leonard John Scheff was born Sept. 10, 1934, in Sherburn, Minn., to Frank and Matilda (Kahler) Scheff. He attended school in Sherburn.

On Oct. 22, 1955, Leonard was united in marriage to Lylas Cimino. This marriage was blessed with three children: Lisa, DeAnn and Jessy.

Leonard and Lylas lived in several different places before ending up in Fairmont. In his younger years, Leonard worked on the river barges in Chicago, Ill., and managed Agrico Fertilizer Company in Fairmont while building a home with his wife. In 1979, he purchased a farm in Bemidji, Minn., where he raised cattle and drove school bus. In 1983, the family moved back to Fairmont. He worked at Agrico again until he and Joe Van de Riet bought the company, naming it Fairmont Ag Supply. It was co-owned and operated for several years until the pair sold to NuWay. Leonard continued working for NuWay for a few years until he retired.

Following retirement, he enjoyed some part-time trucking jobs, helping friends with seasonal farming and heading up north to deer hunt in the fall.

Leonard was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Fairmont.

He enjoyed reading, hunting, fishing, working and socializing with friends. Leonard’s favorite memories he liked to talk about with others were working on the Mississippi River boats, farming experiences and his childhood stories with his 12 siblings.
