FAIRMONT — A funeral service for Ethel J. Smith, age 97, of Fairmont, Minn., will be 2 p.m. Saturday, April 13, 2019, at United Methodist Church in Fairmont, with interment in Lakeside Cemetery, Fairmont. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.

Ethel passed away Tuesday evening, April 9, 2019, at Living Meadows Nursing Home in Madelia, Minn.

Lakeview Funeral Home of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.

Ethel Josephine (Hagen) Smith was born June 18, 1921, in Fairmont, Minn., the daughter of Chris Jr. and Esther (Nordquist) Hagen. Ethel graduated from Fairmont High School.

On Oct. 7, 1941, Ethel was united in marriage to Wayne Smith. This union was blessed with five children: Gloria, Roger, Chuck, Rita, and Becky.

Wayne and Ethel opened Smith’s Greenhouse in 1946. Along with being a homemaker, Ethel was the bookkeeper for the greenhouse and Fairmont Nursery. She was involved in planting at springtime and making wreaths at Christmas time. When Wayne passed away in 1980, Ethel ran the business with her son, Chuck, who later took over after she retired.

Ethel was a member of the Top of the Hill Club in Fairmont. She enjoyed flower gardening, dancing, traveling, puzzles, reading, crocheting, fishing and boating, as well as playing cards and BINGO with friends.

Those left to cherish her memory include her children, Gloria Greiner of Stewartville, Minn., Chuck (Linda) Smith of Fairmont, Minn., Rita Jussila of Ely, Minn., Becky Butler of Merrimac, Wis.; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; several relatives in Trondheim, Norway; other relatives and friends.

Along with her parents, Chris and Esther Hagen, Ethel was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne Smith; son, Roger Smith; brother, Chris Hagen Jr.; and sisters, Lucille Laabs, and Helen Krumholz.
