FAIRMONT — Services for Jonathan Edward Sumey, 56, of Fairmont, Minn., will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont. Burial will be in Hope Lutheran Cemetery, Eagle Bend, Minn.
Jonathan passed away peacefully Tuesday morning, Feb. 5, 2019, at his home in Fairmont. Visitation will be from 9:30-11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2019, at Grace Lutheran Church in Fairmont.
Lakeview Funeral Home and Cremation Service of Fairmont is assisting the family with arrangements.
Jonathan Edward Sumey was born Feb. 9, 1962, in Minneapolis, Minn., to Wayne and Violet (Dahl) Sumey. He was baptized and confirmed at Oak Knoll Lutheran Church in Minnetonka, Minn. He grew up in Plymouth and graduated from Wayzata High School in 1980. Jon graduated from Golden Valley Lutheran College in 1982 and then from Texas Lutheran College in 1984 majoring in German and history. Jon continued his education in Germany and back home at Augsburg College, and also attended the Lutheran Bible Institute in California.
Jon stayed in California, working nights at a Circle K store. His life changed on Nov. 30, 1997, when leaving work, he became the victim of a drive-by shooting. After nine brain surgeries, months in ICU and years of rehab and group homes, Jon came to live near family in Fairmont in 2004.
Jon joined Grace Lutheran Church and Fairmont Early Risers Kiwanis.
He enjoyed listening to music, especially the Beatles and, specifically, Paul McCartney. He was able to see Paul live in concert three times. Jon also enjoyed watching movies, collecting coins, walking and following sports, especially the Fairmont Cardinals and Minnesota Vikings.
Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Violet M. Sumey; brothers, James A. Sumey, and Dr. Steven W. Sumey and his wife, Deb; many nieces, nephews, extended family and a host of friends.
Jon was preceded in death by his father, Wayne D. Sumey; and his sister, Susan M. Sumey.
