BEA hears community engagement report
BLUE EARTH — The Blue Earth Area School Board had a long agenda of items to get through for its meeting on Monday.
Board members heard reports from a variety of school personnel.
Brenda Millmann, the school’s Community Engagement/Workforce Coordinator, gave a presentation on all of the various projects she has developed and worked on for each month of the school year.
There were at least a dozen items listed for each month, including everything from a Back to School Bash in the fall to a Spring Carnival at the end of the school year.
She reported that BEA is once again participating in the AEP (American Exchange Project) program that will have four BEA seniors going to different places in the U.S. for a week, and five seniors from around the country coming to Blue Earth this summer.
“We have also had several roller skating events,” Millmann said. “And I am getting a $9,000 SHIP (Statewide Health Improvement Program) grant to purchase our own roller skates, which would be shared with several other schools.”
Later in the meeting the board discussed extending Millmann’s contract for another three years. At issue was the fact that her salary had been paid using funds the school received during the COVID years, and now the funds would come from the school budget.
After much discussion, her contract was renewed for three years.
The board also heard from former teacher Brenda Smith about the Q-Comp program, principals Dave Dressler and Ty Sturtz and Curriculum and Instruction director Allison Schmidt, all with wrap ups of the school year and plans for next year.
Fiscal Services coordinator Alan Wilhelmi also presented the original budget for the fiscal year 2025. The board approved the budget, which will be adjusted as the school year proceeds.
“Staffing changes, contract changes and enrollment projections will all make differences in the budget,” Wilhelmi said.
