Ceylon hosts town meeting, hears resident concerns

CEYLON — The Ceylon City Council had a special town meeting on Tuesday evening at the Mondale Park shelter house. It was attended by approximately 25 residents.

Discussions were held regarding what the residents want from the city as far as help with concerns and what the residents are willing to help with as volunteers. Residents were encouraged to talk to other residents and council members who are interested in the same problems and solutions for the city.

A list of things that concerned residents included clarity of city water, fixing the sewer system, street repair, maintenance, good neighbors, replacing park equipment, cleaning up the corner of Center Street and Lincoln, barking dogs and rabbits.

The biggest concern was cleaning up dilapidated houses that have been condemned. The slow process of citations being issued to owners, court appearances, fines not paid and no enforcement was discussed. The expensive and legal way to get results occasionally is slower than the residents want.

The leg work and volunteering is the biggest help to the city. Some residents can’t or won’t help, some residents need others to help them so things get done together. Volunteers are needed to do due diligence and find who would accept help, what is needed and then gather volunteers. “What can we do?” was a repeated question during the discussions. The council asked residents to answer that question with “What can I do? What do I want my city to do?” Things can be done together.

Starting at $2.99/week.
