Council hears Hwy 4 update

SHERBURN — The Sherburn City Council met on Monday evening and discussed the ‘Road Closed’ versus the ‘No Thru Traffic’ signs for the Hwy. 4 project. Chief of Police contacted the project DOT manager and they said since there is a way to get to the places on either side that means no traffic. The council asked that the signs be the same and all be ‘Road Closed’ to avoid confusion and controversy.

Derek Behrens from Bolton and Menk Engineers also spoke about the Hwy. 4 Project progress. He mentioned the water lines progress was good even with some set backs. Hopefully they will be finished next week. The manhole problems have been worked out. All the underground work should be done in a month. The council praised the good work of the light installers although the price is high for wire, etc.

Moving to other matters, the fire truck lease was discussed and USDA and Rural Development have been contacted about a lease/loan. Some of the grants contacted had used all the money allocated to them. Some points needed by the council were total cost over 12-15 years and if cash flow is available. Some leases have low interest but the cash flow is effected and some have higher interest. Council discussed different leases and loans and grants hopeful that a low interest loan can be made for the new fire truck.

The Administrator, Leslie Heffele, mentioned that the liquor store had some water damage and the council approved a quote for the repair. She also had a report about the streets that need maintenance and a quote from Bargen company for $21,000 for 13 streets and roads. Cargill needs gravel and patches due to the increased traffic during the construction. The Township will be asked to help with Temperance Lake Road since they own half. She suggested a new gravel every four years and new sealcoating every three. The council approved the Bargen company quote.

Police Chief, Trevor Yochim, reported that Clean Up Day on May 4 was successful and some of theitems mentioned as violations of ordinances were cleaned up. They have been very busy because of the road construction and closures. He asked that everyone use kindness and common sense when traveling near the construction.

Council reports included the information that some small maple trees donated by the Lions Club were planted by the Boys Scouts by parks and the Scouts will water them when needed.

The next meeting is scheduled for 5 p.m. on May 20 at Sherburn City Hall.
