SHERBURN– A $63 million bond referendum to build a new school building in Sherburn for all Martin County West students grades preschool through 12th failed on Tuesday with unofficial numbers coming in at 911 no votes and 861 yes votes.

A second request for a new auditorium and gym for an additional $9 million also failed with unofficial numbers of 722 no votes and 656 yes votes.

Official numbers were not posted Tuesday night on the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State website, but the aforementioned results were publicly posted at each precinct. According to the Office of the Minnesota Secretary of State website there were 2,741 registered voters in the district.

Cori Reynolds, Superintendent of the MCW School District, said, “we came up short. It wasn’t the outcome we wanted, but we respect the people who made their voices known and we look forward to working with people to come up with solutions because the problems are still there.”

Next she said the school board will need to discuss a new plan and the conversation will include input from staff and community members.
