MCW plans for upcoming year

SHERBURN– The Martin County West School Board met Monday and accepted a grant with thanks to the First Robotics Team for $2,000. The board discussed hiring an administrative assistant and wondered if current employees could fulfill the duties. They approved the

position. Alicia Swanson, secretary at Trimont School, explained the online

registration used this year. She said that 52 percent of the students had completed the registration. This saved time and paper and resources. They will improve the registration for next year but werepleased with the turn out and the ease to register this year. They

will contact students that were registered previously if they are not registered. There are computers at the school for those parents with no computer available at home.

Tom Elliot, activities director, also shared bout a scoreboard with shot clock available for basketball. He explained the scoreboard that will be ordered. The scoreboard at Trimont had to be replaced and the scoreboard at the high school needed to have a module added. The Booster Club has donated $30,000 and there are other donations of $5,270. That would lead to about $6,000 more needed by the school or other donations. The scoreboard is made by Daktronics which is similar to those in the high school.

In other news, enrollment and finances were explained by Superintendent, Cory Reynolds. So far enrollment is Sherburn 142, Trimont 182, Jr. High 94 and Sr. High 226, and preschool almost full with 4 sections.

The board also approved school board elections in November; eight hour training for bus drivers; pay rates for substitutes ($150 for teachers, paras $11.75, custodial $12.25, and food service $11.50)and hiring ISG facility assessment services members Kevin

Hildebrandt and Charlotte Neinhaus. They will begin right away and report by March as to the physical assessment of the buildings and how the buildings work with staff and students. Building and Grounds Committee said they were highly recommended.

High school principal, Autumn Welcome, reported that there will be a meeting August 21 to familiarize students with policy, schedules, etc. They need an upper math teacher for calculus, pre-calculus and statistics. They may have online lessons since it has been hard to find a qualified teacher.

Trimont principal, Michelle Baker, reported that attendance percentage was very good and she met with the teachers and intervention staff are needed. Fundraiser ideas are being

formulated. Elementary school principal, Nickole Bowie, reported that so far 59

students registered. She has met with teachers and there will be an August 22 meeting to schedule conferences with parents Sept. 6 and Sept. 7.

CER has tried to coordinate classes and volunteers with school activity to help the students succeed now and in the future at school. There will be an ECFE survey soon.

The board went into a closed session to discuss labor negotiations strategy pursuant to state law.
