Sherburn talks upcoming projects

SHERBURN– The Sherburn City Council held its Tuesday evening due to the holiday on Monday. Greg Mitchell, engineer from Bolton and Menk, reported on the upcoming street improvement construction projects in the northwest part of Sherburn. There were five areas mentioned. The largest is the complete renovation of Osborne Street from First Street to Fifth Street and side streets at Second, Third, and Fourth streets. This will cost approximately $2.7 million dollars and the City has a grant to help pay for that. One of the other locations was South Main Street, which will be a project similar to a maintenance project. Another location discussed was Lynn Street from Highway 26 to Second

Street which will be an interim bituminous six inch surface. Temperance Lake Road near the Sherburn Fire Department needs some resurfacing for about 100 feet, to avoid large drops where the trucks leave the fire station. The whole road up to Fox Lake Avenue was discussed but the extra cost was near $200,000 over the $50,000 for the fire station project. This was tabled for another time if the City can negotiate or receive a grant or loan to help with that added expense.

Cargill Street from South Prairie to South Main was also discussed with an estimated cost of at least $130,000. The council discussed questions and comments from all about the $3.2 million dollar projects and the cost. The proposed schedule for these projects included a resolution to accept this feasibility report that night, which the council did. The next step was recommended as a public hearing about the improvements planned. The public hearing was scheduled for Feb. 7. Watch for further information about location and time for this meeting. A possible schedule for this project was discussed. If the plan is approved after the public meeting, the council will then open the project for bids around March 3rd and construction may be done in May with completion to be done in October.

The council meeting continued with a thank you resolution to accept the donation from Beverly Roben for the Sherburn Fire Department. The council also approved a motion to donate $500 to the after-prom party. The administrator’s report included a year-end police department report. Brad Hughes also reported that the construction on the Wastewater Treatment Plant should begin next week.

The next meeting of the Sherburn City Council is scheduled on Feb. 7.
