Albert Lea man charged with burglary, assault
FAIRMONT — An Albert Lea man is facing felony charges in Martin County.
Jamie Duane Mead, 32, has been charged with burglary in the first degree, which carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $35,000 fine.
Mead also has been charged with one count of domestic assault and one count of harassment, both of which carry a maximum penalty of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. He also faces a charge of domestic assault by strangulation, which carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
According to the complaint:
On April 24, Fairmont police officers were dispatched to an apartment in the 100 block of Downtown Plaza on a report of a domestic assault. As an officer walked up the stairs, he was met by a crying woman who advised that Mead had kicked in her door and assaulted her.
The woman explained that she has a restraining order against Mead. She said she was at a relative’s residence when Mead called and said he was planning to come over that evening. The woman explained it was not uncommon for the two of them to have conversations by phone even though the restraining order was in place.
The woman said Mead arrived at her residence at 10 p.m., at which point she opened the secured entrance and allowed him to enter her apartment. She said things were going fine until she began to ask him about another girl she suspected he was seeing. She said Mead immediately became angered.
She said Mead got onto the bed where she was lying and hovered over her before pulling her hair and putting his hands on her neck to strangle her. She said she could not breathe while he was choking her.
She said she asked Mead on multiple occasions to get out of her apartment before he eventually left. She said she locked her door, but Mead came back two minutes later and kicked the door open. She said Mead again pulled her hair, and she ended up on the floor and he kicked her. She said Mead again left the apartment and she called 911.
The officer observed swelling and a small puncture wound on the woman’s left hand, as well as abrasions and redness on the left side of her neck and small cuts to the top left side of her lip.
A check of Mead’s criminal history shows a convictions for domestic assault by strangulation in 2018 and violation of a domestic abuse no contact order, also in 2018.
