BEA boys close state golf meet in 8th

JORDAN — “It’s not the end, this is the beginning,” Blue Earth Area head boys golf coach Travis Armstrong told his team after the final day of the Class AA state golf meet.

The Bucs finished eighth with a two-day score of 666 on Tuesday at The Ridges @ Sand Creek in Jordan. However, with a seventh-grader, two eighth-graders, a freshman and two sophomores comprising the team, Armstrong is optimistic about the team’s future.

“This is the very first chapter of this group’s book,” Armstrong said. “We’re just going to try and get better in the summer, come back and shoot better next year.”

Gaven Bruellman led the way again for the Bucs, shooting 39s on both sides for a 78 and two-day total of 151 to earn a share of 21st place overall.

“Gaven had a great tournament,” Armstrong said. “He got a 78 and kind of set the tone for the offseason.”

Manning Lane lowered his Day 1 tally for a round of 42-41–83, bringing his state tournament score to 168 for the Bucs.

Hunter Spencer recorded a 173 over the two days, shooting an 18-hole score of 44-44–88 on Wednesday. Braden Gudahl penciled 45 on the front and back nine and produced a 174 in the tournament.

Nathan Murphy shot a 48-56–104 and Tate Thielfoldt marked a 46-53–99 for two-day totals of 218 and 222, respectively.

Red Wing’s Cecil Belisle came through on the second day with a score of 35-36–71 to win the individual championship, bringing his two-day score to 139. Litchfield’s Brandon Nelson, Paul Stankey of Providence Academy and Lincoln Cizek (Holy Family) tied for second at 141. The Blake School repeated as the Class AA state champion, scoring a 295 on Day 2 for a tournament-best 587.

Holy Family shot a second-day 306 for a total of 601 to take the runner-up spot. Detroit Lakes and Hermantown shot 311s, but Detroit Lakes used its Day 1 score to occupy third place with a 605, followed by Hermantown (616).

St. Cloud Cathedral shot a 316 to finish fifth (626), while Lake City produced a 317 to complete the tournament with a 630. New Ulm nabbed the seventh-place finish with a 331 on Day 2 for a score of 658.

Detroit Lakes also repeated as champions during the girls state tournament for its fifth title in six years. The Lakers scored a 312 on the final day to bring their total to 649. Lake City shot a 321 to end with a 653. Visitation recorded a 328 for the third spot with a tournament total of 673, and Minnewaska produced a 684, shooting 328 Wednesday, for fourth.

Breck’s second-day score of 341 allowed a final tally of 692 for a fifth-place showing. International Falls took the sixth spot, marking a 372 on the day and 692 in the tournament.

Jordan penciled a score of 360 en route to a tournament total of 732 for seventh place. Osakis shot a 389 to round out the teams for a final score of 803.

Visitation’s Anni Heck outdueled Minnewaska’s Ashtyn Guggisberg, 69-74, to finish first overall. Heck posted a tournament-low 144 and Guggisberg scored a 147.

Fairmont freshman Bergen Senf shot a 43 on the back nine for a round of 88 Wednesday. Senf tied with Visitation’s Lizzy Azar for 25th place overall with a two-day total of 175.

Blue Earth Area’s Mateja Lane improved upon her Day 1 score for a second-round tally of 97, ending the meet with a 197 for 64th.

In Day 2 of the Class A state golf meet, Mahnomen/Waubun and Lac qui Parle Valley both shot 337s. But the Indians outshot the Eagles, 316-334, on the first day to take the crown.

Sleepy Eye United fell from second and shot a 343 on Wednesday for third place (673). Mounds Park Academy recorded a score of 331-346–677 for a fourth-place finish, while Ottertail Central (348-339–687) took fifth.

Mesabi East compiled a 351 for a sixth-place score of 690 and Blooming Prairie shot a 350 to end the tournament with a 697 for seventh. Westbrook-Walnut Grove (358-382–740) finished eighth.

Tommy Braaten of Blooming Prairie recorded a Day 2 score of 35-37–72 for a first-place total of 140. Mounds Park Academy’s Matt Berning took runner-up honors with a 78 on the day and tournament tally of 150.

Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther’s Parker Stevens shot a 45 on the front nine for a score of 94 on the day. Stevens finished with a 175 in a seven-way tie for 43rd.
