Area roundup: Martin County splits Red Bull Triangular

WRESTLING

SHERBURN – The Martin County Red Bulls went 1-1 during Tuesday night’s Red Bull Triangular in Sherburn. Martin County topped Mankato West 48-20 and fell to St. James/Madelia 47-27 at the Martin County High School gymnasium.

Pierce Rohman (139 lbs), Aaron Becker (215 lbs) and DJ Miller (285 lbs) all picked up two pins.  Rohman earned wins against Mankato West’s Bly Mettler and SJM’s Kalon Erickson. Becker picked up victories over Mankato West’s James Engelen and SJM’s Kolten Tande. Miller took down Eli Ahmann from Mankato West and SJM’s Jeremiah Garza to hold down the final weight class. Austin Newcombe (189 lbs) picked up an 8-7 decision win over SJM’s Braxton Anderson. Kaedin Lange (172 lbs) and Luis Martin (189 lbs) each notched a pin over their Mankato West opponent: Lincoln Lundgren and Michael Hoag.

 

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Fairmont 88, Windom 57

WINDOM – Sara Junkermeier and her Fairmont girls basketball team used an all-around scoring output to push past Windom on Tuesday night, advancing their record to 17-1 on the season. Five different Cardinals finished with double digits.

Brylee Miller notched 30 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and seven blocks. Makenzie Lowry and Makayla Lowry combined for 27 points on 10 made field goals. Bria Williamson had another strong night with 12 points and seven rebounds. Gwyneth Schultz missed just two shots on her way to a 10 point performance. Fairmont knocked down eight 3-pointers and made all but four free throws.

Fairmont (17-1) will take on Pipestone Area this Friday, beginning at 6 p.m.

 

MCW 62, GHEC/T/ML 61

TRUMAN – The Martin County Mavericks won a nail-biting contest over Granada Huntley East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther on Tuesday night at Truman High School, defeating the Jaguars 62-61 to earn their 11th win of the season.

Maddie Carlson powered all Mavericks with 24 points on 10 made field goals. Ida Rohman helped Carlson with 11 points of her own.

For GHEC/T/ML, it was the combination of Kiera Benck and Londyn Bowers each scoring 19 points. Bowers had seven rebounds while the duo each notched three steals.

MCW (11-8) will take on Nicollet this Friday. GHEC/T/ML (8-6) will host Alden-Congor/Glenville-Emmons this Thursday. Both games are set to start at 7 p.m.

 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Fairmont 59, Windom 45

WINDOM – The Fairmont boys basketball team extended its winning streak to eight after Tuesday night’s 59-45 victory over Windom. The Cardinals are 13-2 on the season.

Logan Junkermeier hit 50% of his field goals en route to a 15 point scoring output. He also brought down nine rebounds. Joseph Hackett’s 12 points came from four outside shots. Brayden Williamson finished the night with 12 points and four assists.

Fairmont (13-2) will take on Pipestone Area this Friday. Tip-off is set for 7:15 p.m.
