FAIRMONT – The Fairmont High School girls tennis team won its first matchup of the Section 2A bracket on Monday night, topping Redwood Valley, 6-1, with the help of all four singles players earning wins in their respective matches.
“We were excited to get a home match,” head coach Laura Olsen said. “Kind of went with a lineup that we have used several times this season, and we were pretty confident that the girls could pull it off. Really pleased with how the girls played.”
Headlining that lineup was No. 1 Singles Emelia Klanderud, who took care of business against Kaelynn Welsh from Redwood Valley with 6-1 and 6-0 set victories.
No. 2 Singles Alison Slama battled adversity throughout her afternoon, going back and forth with Eloise Brozek before taking home the 6-3, 6-2 victory.
Both the No. 3 and No. 4 singles players, Ella Wubbena and Carly Gustafson, cruised to victory in their respective matches. Wubbena toppled Faith Bruns 6-1, 6-0 while Gustafson beat Anais Cournoyer 6-0, 6-1.
“Emelia got off to a hot start. Carly cruised through that first set pretty quickly, I think she was done with the first set before anyone else had a few games in,” Olsen said. “It was fun to see them stay focused in the second set and take care of business.”
On the doubles side of things, Fairmont continued to play well and battle through challenges.
The No. 1 pairing of Madisyn Peyman and Katherine Zelaya beat Grace Blare and Kiki Goodthunder 6-3, 6-4. The No. 3 paring of Addison Toothaker and Ada Edmundson took care of Emma Linsmeier and Elle Iverson 6-3, 6-4.
No. 2 doubles Belinda Lutterman and Cadleigh Jobe couldn’t bounce back from the first set loss to Iris Vogland and Ellery Larsen, dropping the match 7-5, 6-1.
“Sometimes it’s hard to come out on a Monday, especially a hot Monday,” Olsen said. “But they really showed up and played well. Really pleased with the outcome.”
Fairmont will play St. James Area this Thursday in the semifinal round of the Section 2A bracket. The match will be held at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter at 9 a.m.
“We know they are pretty solid and pretty deep,” Olsen said. “We’ve got to talk through our lineup options and see where we think we can be the most competitive. The nice thing is that we have got a lot of girls that can play singles and doubles pretty competitively, so we can get a little creative if we need to.”
