Jaguars boys take 3rd in second leg of conference tourney

SLEEPY EYE/SPRINGFIELD — The Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Truman/Martin Luther boys finished third Monday in the second round of three in the Tomahawk-Valley Conference Golf Tournament at the Sleepy Eye Golf Club.
The Sleepy Eye United boys led the way Monday with a team-high score of 314, 34 shots under New Ulm Cathedral, which turned in a team score of 348. Finishing third on the day as a team was GHEC/T/ML (360), while Springfield took fourth (363) and Cedar Mountain and Alden-Conger tied for fifth (366). Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop took seventh (369), while Madelia took eighth (372), Martin County West took ninth (390) and Wabasso took 10th (438). Buffalo-Lake-Hector-Stewart was incomplete.
The girls second leg of the tourney took place at the Springfield Golf Course, with the Martin County West girls finished seventh on the day.
The SEU girls finished first on the day with a 371, Springfield finished second as a team on Monday with a (406). Alden-Conger finished third (431), while Cedar Mountain came in fourth (450) and Madelia ended up in fifth with a 451. New Ulm Cathedral took sixth (456), Martin County West (457) took seventh, Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop finished eighth (470), Wabasso finished ninth (475) and Granada-Huntley-Easy Chain/Truman/Martin Luther ended up 10th (505). Buffalo-Lake-Hector-Stewart was incomplete.
Cathedral’s Owen Strei was the boys medalist for the second time in a row in the tournament after medaling on April 21 in Sherburn. On Monday, he shot a 2-over-par 74 to medal.
Finishing second behind Strei on Monday was GHEC/T/ML’s Landon Zimmer, who shot a 76. SEU’s Anders Coulson shot a 77 along with teammate Nolan Kucera to tie for third, while SEU’s Blaine Arneson and Josh Sellner both shot an 80 along with Springfield’s Braiden Davis to tie for fifth. MCW’s Knox Larson turned in an 81 for eighth, while Cedar Mountain’s Blake Schueller carded an 82 for ninth and teammate Carson Schiller shot an 83 for 10th. GHEC/T/ML’s Gavin Kester shot an 84 for 11th.
The boys tournament point standings sees Strei still in front with 60 points, followed by Arneson (52), Zimmer (51.5), Schueller (51), Kester (48), Larson (48), Coulson (48) and Kucera (46). Christensen, Schiller and Davis are tied for ninth in points with 43.5.
As a team, the SEU boys have 20 tournament points. GHEC/T/ML (17), Cathedral (17), Springfield (14) and Alden-Conger (11.5) round out the top five boys teams through the first two legs.
The girls medalist in Springfield was SEU’s Sam Price, who carded an 87 to finish ahead of teammate Kiara Murphy, who shot a 92 for second. Mavri Winkelmann of Springfield tied for third with BLHS’s Ava Ahlbrecht after both shot 93s, while SEU’s Ella Pollard carded a 95 for fifth and Springfield’s Kynslee Kastner shot a 97 along with SEU’s Chloe Walter to tie for sixth. Madelia’s Katherine DeVlaeminck shot a 98 to take eighth on the day, while Alden-Conger’s Courtney Bakkedahl shot a 99 for ninth and Springfield’s Ava Lipetzky shot a 101 for 10th. MCW’s Brenna Heifner missed the top 10 by three strokes as she shot a 104 for 12th place. GHEC/T/ML’s top girls golfer on the day was Charlotte Berhow, who turned in a 114 for 24th.
Leading the overall point standings in the girls is Price, who leads the way with 59.5 tournament points, ahead of Winkelmann (57), Pollard (53.5), Murphy (53), Walter (50.5), Ahlbrecht (50), Bakkedahl (47), DeVlaeminck (45.5), Lee (44.5) and Lipetzky (42).
As a team, SEU leads with 20 tournament points. Springfield (18), Alden-Conger (16), Madelia (11) and MCW (10) round out the top five girls teams in tournament points.
The boys tournament concludes in Madelia on Monday, while the girls tourney wraps up in Sanborn on Monday. All tournament points are worth double in the final leg.
