FAIRMONT – Fairmont senior thrower Oliver Tordsen and his record-setting throw helped propel the Fairmont Cardinals boys to the Class AA title at the 69th Sentinel Relays.

“It’s a big PR,” said Tordsen. “It’s a 14-foot PR from that last throw, so it’s really good. I know the wind helped, but overall, I think it was just an amazing throw. It was good.”

Tordsen and Hank Artz took the reins for the Cardinals in the shot put, with Tordsen taking gold with a throw of 47 feet, 10 inches, and Artz locking in bronze (46-4.5).

The tandem continued their dominance in the discus. Tordsen shattered not only the Sentinel Relay record throw held by his brother, Sawyer Tordsen (163 feet, 5 inches), but he also passed his own previous school record of 170 feet, 10 inches, by launching the discus 184 feet, 5 inches. That throw is also currently the season’s longest throw in the state and 59th in the country. Artz joined in taking home bronze with a throw of 141 feet, 8 inches.

“Oliver’s a really impressive young man,” said Fairmont head coach Jesse Walters. “He’s a really impressive athlete and there’s almost nothing he can do to surprise you anymore. I don’t even know what his potential truly is. I’ve never seen anything like him. 184 feet, 5 inches today, which is a Sentinel Relays record, a school record.”

Jeremiah Lebbi contributed a bronze medal in the win for Fairmont, posting a 100-meter dash time of 11.3.9, finishing only one hundredth of a second behind Hanley Neumann (11.38), and .14 seconds behind gold medalist Ben Dahlin of Jackson County Central (11.25).

It was in the 400 that Fairmont’s Jaydon Putney sprinted his way to a silver medal, running a steady 53.39, just behind Hutchinson’s Nathan Johnson (52.70).

Fairmont netted bronze and silver medals in the boys 1,600. Carter Hanson placed second with a solid time of 4:48.9, while Brier Lenort locked in Bronze (4:48.90). River Valley senior Matthew Groebner ultimately took the gold home (4:47.85).

Fairmont claimed the silver in the boys 4×200 relay thanks to the team of Elijah Johnson, Caleb Chambers, Lebbi and Putney with a time of 1:34.64.

The silver medals kept coming for the Cardinals as the team of Devin Hanson, Jordan Thompson, Cooper Gudahl and Brier Lenort posted a time of 8:43.27 in the boys 4×800 relay.

The 1,600-meter medley found another silver for the Cardinals; this time it was the team of Seth Siebring, Travohn Harvey, Jordan Thompson and Carter Hanson finishing with a time of 3:53.85.

Tytan Tumbleson of the Cardinals cleared 6 feet on his way to a gold medal in the boys high jump, beating out Blue Earth Area’s Isaac Anderson, who took second place (5-10).

In the pole vault, Fairmont’s Jase Meade contributed a bronze medal to the tally, clearing 11 feet even.

Tumbleson’s aerial dominance carried over to the long where he cleared 19 feet, 4.75 inches to snag a gold medal, before tacking on a bronze medal in the triple jump with a personal record of 38 feet, 10 inches.

Nelson Remington placed first in the wheelchair 200 with a time of 31.85, the wheelchair 400-meter (1:02.70) and the wheelchair 1,600-meter (1:02.70).

BEA found the podium in both the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles, posting a 16.75 in the 110 hurdles, and a 43.35 in the 300 hurdles, both courtesy of Marcus Eckles for two silver medals.

The Cardinals next meet is the True Team meet at 3 p.m. Tuesday. BEA heads to USC at 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Starting at $2.99/week.
