Back-to-back Class AA gold for Fairmont girls

FAIRMONT – The Fairmont Cardinals girls brought home their second consecutive Class AA Sentinel Relay title on Friday, this time by a margin of 13.5 points scoring a 139.5.

“It felt pretty good,” said Fairmont senior Kennedy Becker. “They’re good, all good runners. We got Nat Johnson, who’s really fast, as a young girl, Mollie Leiding, who’s really fast, and Harper, who’s also very fast, so it’s a very fun team to run with.”

Mollie Leiding of Fairmont found the podium for the Cardinals in the 100-meter dash, posting a time of 13.35 for her first medal of the night, taking home the bronze.

Fairmont’s medal hunt continued to find success in the girls 200-meter dash, with Harper Artz claiming the top spot with a time of 27.06, while Mollie Leiding set a personal record of 27.66 for the silver medal, adding to the Cardinal tally.

Artz claimed third in the 400 after posting a time of 1:01.34, narrowly falling to Mila Beitz of Minneapolis South, who posted a 1:01.30.

Fairmont claimed gold and bronze in the 1,600 with Macy Hanson taking gold with a solid 5:15.67, and teammate Abbie Simpson claiming the bronze with a time of 6:00.85.

The Cardinals again sprinted and jumped to the podium in the girls 100-meter hurdles when Cadence Leiding posted a time of 17 seconds flat for the silver medal.

Two Cardinals found two of the three medals up for grabs in the girls 300-meter hurdles. Cadence Leiding claimed the silver with a time of 51.09, while her teammate Bella Schroeder walked away with the bronze, posting a 51.90.

The team of Nathaliah Johnson, Kennedy Becker, Mollie Leiding and Artz sprinted to the gold medal slot in the girls 4×200, running a solid 1:50.89.

Fairmont’s success in the relays continued into the 4×800 when Abbie Simpson, Mackenzie Gerhardt, Kendra Bloomster and Ella Wubbena teamed up to post an 11:07.68 to claim the bronze medal.

The silver medal went home with Fairmont in the 1,600-meter medley when the team of Alexis Fuller, Madi Thompson, Emelia Klanderud and Wubbena ran a steady 4:42.28.

Fairmont’s top two girls in the shot put brought home gold and bronze with Ellie Ortega launching a throw of 34 feet, 8.5 inches for gold, while teammate Kennedy Becker cleared 31 feet, .5 inches for the bronze medal.

Blue Earth’s Tailor Douglas claimed the gold in the pole vault comfortably clearing 8 feet, 6 inches to help the BEA tally.

Jadyn Montgomery flew through the air clearing 31 feet, 4 inches for a personal best and a distance that landed her on the podium for a gold medal.

The Cardinals next meet is the True Team meet at 3 p.m. Tuesday. BEA heads to USC at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
