Red Bulls win Dick Maher Invitational

BLUE EARTH– The Fairmont/Martin County Red Bulls won the nine-team Dick Maher Invitational Wrestling Tournament by the slimmest of margins, edging Maple River/United South Central by half a point, 164.5-164.

The annual tournament took place on Saturday, Dec. 7, at Blue Earth Area High School.

Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton placed third with 144 points, Tri-City United was fourth with 143, Triton finished fifth with 119, Worthington placed sixth with 94, Waseca was seventh with 81.5, BEA took eighth with 77 and La Crescent-Hokah was ninth with 42.5.

Pierce Rohman at 133 pounds, Torrey Paplow at 145 and Ty Kolbe at 172 each captured first place for the Red Bulls.

Fairmont/Martin County also had two wrestlers finish in the runner-up position, Maddex Faber at 160 pounds and Ivan Martin at 215.

Other Red Bull wrestlers placing in the top four were 189-pounder Aaron Becker and 285-pounder David Miller who each finished in third place along with fourth-place finishers Brock Stauffer at 139 pounds and Kaedin Lange at 152 pounds.

The Buccaneers had two wrestlers reach the finals. Drake Engelby won the championship at 121 pounds and Timmy Nagel was the runner-up at 127 pounds.

Rohman won his first round match by a 16-0 technical fall over Alexander De La Merced of Triton. He also won by a technical fall in the semifinal round when he defeated Jace Ignazewski of MR/USC 17-2.

Rohman claimed the championship at 133 pounds when he pinned Carson Petry of WEM/JWP in 2:52.

A 24-5 opening round technical fall by Paplow over MR/USC’s Shaune Peterson sent the Red Bulls 145-pounder into the semifinals where he won by a fall over BEA’s Layden Bassett in 1:18.

In the finals, Paplow won by a 20-3 technical fall over Wyatt Walters of MR/USC.

Kolbe began his journey to the championship at 172 pounds with an opening round 21-5 technical fall over Levi Hennings of Worthington. Kolbe punched his ticket to the championship by defeating Kolt Bullerman of MR/USC 18-1 for another technical fall victory.

Kolbe secured the championship at 172 pounds with a 9-3 decision over Cole Kodada of Triton.

The Red Bulls will host a triangular meet on Thursday, Dec. 12, beginning at 5 p.m., against Jackson County Central and New Ulm.
