Johnson powers Belle Plaine girls hoopsters by Fairmont

BELLE PLAINE — Rachel Johnson poured in a game-leading 24 points to power the Belle Plaine Tigers to a 57-37 victory over the Fairmont Cardinals during a late added non-league regular-season basketball game Friday night in Belle Plaine.

Nevaeh Rahm scored a team-high 12 points and pulled down five rebounds for Fairmont, while teammate Ava Terfehr approached a double-double performance by netting nine points and grabbing a team-best eight boards.

Grace Pendergast contributed eight points and five rebounds to the Cardinals’ effort, Ellie Ortega supplied six points, while Hope Klanderud garnered five boards.

Marley Ziemke chipped in 10 points for Belle Plaine, while teammate Josie Schmidt tallied nine points.

Fairmont (15-11), who earned the South Sub-Section’s No. 1 seed, will await the winner between Luverne and Redwood Valley in a 6 p.m. Section 3AA quarterfinal on Thursday at a neutral site to be determined.

Belle Plaine (9-15), who received the No. 3 seed, will play host to No. 6-seeded Minnesota Valley Lutheran in a 7 p.m. Section 2AA first-round playoff game in Belle Plaine.

Makayla Lowry produced a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds to guide Fairmont to a season-ending 59-44 win over Belle Plaine during B-squad action Friday night.

Norah Traetow scored 12 points for the Cardinals, Emelia Klanderud supplied 11 points and six assists, while Makenzie Lowry added 11 points.

The Fairmont B-squad ended its season with a 16-8 record.
