Fairmont girls tennis serves 4-3 loss to Waseca
WASECA — Fairmont’s girls tennis lineup demonstrated its resiliency during Tuesday’s Big South Conference clash on the road.
The Cardinals pocketed two of three extended singles matches to help trigger a 4-3 league triumph over the Waseca Bluejays in Waseca.
Fairmont’s Abi Peyman lost her opening set by a 6-1 decision to Takya Schoenrock during second singles action only to reverse the momentum to flip the second set’s score in her favor.
Peyman then outslugged Schoenrock in a down-to-the-wire third set, 6-4, to capture the critical point for the Cardinals.
Elly Stegge garnered her first set by a 7-5 decision over Waseca’s Maddy Benson during third singles action only to have Benson rally for a 6-4 second-set win.
Stegge fended off Benson down the stretch to capture a 6-3 third-set win to add a key team point to Fairmont’s ledger.
Hope Klanderud coasted to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over the Bluejays’ Sarah Haley during first singles play for Fairmont’s initial point.
Ellie Plumhoff and Claire Brockmann combined court forces to produce Fairmont’s only team tally in the doubles bracket.
Plumhoff and Brockmann teamed up to net back-to-back 6-4 set wins over Esme Pearce and Ashton Jenzen at the No. 3 position in the doubles lineup.
Waseca battled to the wire to collect all three of its points as Addie Pfeifer needed three sets to outlast Fairmont’s Madi Peyman in a hard-fought battle at fourth singles.
Pfeifer claimed the opening set by a 6-2 decision before Peyman rallied for a 6-4 second-set win. Pfeifer answered to net the third set by a 6-2 decision.
Ironically, Waseca captured both first and second doubles by identical close-to-the-end 7-5, 6-4 decisions.
Lizzie Roessler and Mia Kanewischer combined skills at the No. 1 spot to squeeze by the Cardinals’ tandem of Emelia Klanderud and Brynn Gustafson. The Bluejays’ Paige Dufault and Vivian Mader teamed at the No. 2 doubles position to edge Jaydan Moses and Carly Gustafson.
Fairmont (6-2) travels to New Ulm on Thursday.
