FAIRMONT — The Fairmont U16 and U18 girls soccer lineups kick off their respective state tournaments today and Saturday at the College of St. Benedict in Saint Joseph.

The Fairmont U16 team — sponsored by Bank Midwest — opens state action at 5 p.m. today against Arrowhead/Cloquet.

Fairmont U16 returns to the collegiate field on Saturday for an 8 a.m. second-round contest against Mississippi Valley before taking on Central Minnesota in a 1:30 p.m. third-round game.

The U16 state championship match is slated for noon on Sunday in Saint Joseph.

Fairmont’s U18 squad — which is sponsored by Associate Optometry — opens state play at 10 a.m. Saturday against St. Peter before facing Sartell at 3:30 p.m. that same day.

Fairmont takes on Central Minnesota at 8 a.m. Sunday. The U18 state championship clash is scheduled for 2 p.m. Sunday.

The Fairmont U18 squad closed out the regular season by doubling New Prague, 4-2, on July 10 in New Prague.

Kennedy Becker generated two goals for Fairmont U18, while Emma Scheppmann converted a penalty kick for a goal and doled out a pair of assists.

Anna Utermarck capped Fairmont’s winning ways with a goal, while teammate Elayna Anderson doled out an assist.

Madi Stromberg produced 10 saves between the pipes to net the regular-season win for Fairmont U18.

Goaltender Mary Bennett generated 13 saves to pace Fairmont U16’s 3-0 shutout win over Owatonna on June 29 at Kot Soccer Complex in Fairmont.

Abbie Simpson produced one goal and an assist, Frankie Martin scored two goals and Maia Goerndt doled out one assist to trigger Fairmont’s offensive performance.
