MCW’s Schmidt, Weber post 1-2 Valley golf showing
Hunter Schmidt
SHERBURN — Martin County West golf teammates Hunter Schmidt and Mitchell Weber captured medalist and runner-up medalist honors, respectively, during Tuesday’s Valley Conference Meet, but the duo’s low 18-hole rounds were not enough to propel the Mavericks to the team championship.
Schmidt carded a first-place individual score of 37-40-77, connecting on the Fox Lake Golf Course’s par-4 third hole and its par-4 eighth cup for birdies to complement a team-best nine pars to earn the gold medal. Weber proved a model of consistency by firing a 41-40-81, highlighted by eight pars, to garner the silver medal as the host Mavericks placed third (357) in the six-team standings.
Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial won the boys league championship with a 350 — only one stroke better than Alden-Conger’s second-place 351 and seven lower than MCW. St. Clair/ Mankato Loyola finished fourth (378), followed by Madelia (381) and the Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/Martin Luther Jaguars (398).
Kale Larson made two pars to pace a 53-45-98 for the host Mavericks, while Carson Scheff penciled in a 52-49-101 with one par to cap the team’s counting scores. Issak Engstrom (109) and Josh Roben (111) completed the host team’s effort.
Jaguar golfer Gavin Kester and Madelia’s Cross Schmidt each joined Hunter Schmidt and Weber in earning all-conference status via their top 10 overall finishes.
Kester claimed a share of a three-way tie for the bronze medal by producing an 18-hole round of 41-43-84, including five pars, to top the Jaguars’ performance. Cross Schmidt generated a 46-41-87, spearheaded by a team-best seven pars, to captured eighth place individually for the Blackhawks.
Landon Zimmer (94), Zach Flohrs (108) and Jonah Carlson (112) rounded out the Jaguars’ counting marks, while Wyatt Luhmann chipped in a 115. Zimmer made three pars to pace his round.
Noah Tierney (94), Josiah DeMaris (95) and Tatem Holm (105) capped Madelia’s counting totals, while Trey Missling (107) and Parker Jensen (111) rounded out the day’s work.
In the girls’ competition, Emma Kleinschrodt tied for runner-up medalist honors with a round of 100 to squeeze Alden-Conger to a 458-467 win over Madelia’s solid outing.
Katherine DeVlaeminck earned the conference’s gold medal by firing a 49-50-99, including three pars, to top Madelia’s second-place team performance. Savannah Wyman and Katie Bocock each shot 118s to share all-conference accolades in fifth place overall for the Blackhawks.
Alexa Schultze claimed all-league honors by netting seventh place individually with a round of 119 to pace MCW’s third-place team total of 501, while teammate Brenna Heifner generated a 121 to claim an all-conference bid in eighth place.
Kylan Andersen (128) and Layla Smith (133) wrapped up MCW’s counting marks, while Shanna Amborn (137) and Clare Paulson (140) completed the host team’s effort.
Genesis Robles Moran (132) and Jocelyne Orellana (149) rounded out Madelia’s performance.
Martin County West and Madelia will tee it up next Tuesday for Day 1 of the girls’ Section 2A Meet at North Links Golf Course in Mankato before the MCW, Madelia and Truman/GHEC/ Martin Luther boys teams open sectional play at North Links on Thursday, June 1.
