Prochniak, Fraker pace North Union tracksters at Relays

ARMSTRONG — North Union’s Bryer Prochniak and Shelby Fraker sprinted to four medals apiece to guide the Warriors’ boys and girls track & field teams to respective third- and fourth-place finishes during Monday’s Tom Elliott/Jim Godfredsen Relays in Armstrong.

Prochniak, a Minnesota State University-Mankato football commit, blistered the tarred surface in the 100-meter dash in a gold-medal time of 11.13 seconds to literally get the Warriors off to a fast start.

Prochniak then anchored both North Union’s winning 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams, while handling the second leg on the first-place 4×400 squad.

Landon Price, Carter Morphew, Gavyn Morphew and Prochniak traded handoffs to generate a winning time of 45.74 in the 4×100. Price, Carter Morphew, Preston Guerdet and Prochniak then combined for a gold-medal mark of 1:35.19 in the 4×200 for the Warriors.

Carter Morphew, Prochniak, Gavyn Morphew and Guerdet then exchanged the baton in the 4×400 to break the tape first in 3:40.77.

Colin Rasch contributed a first-place toss of 46 feet, 4 1/2 inches in the shot put to North Union’s effort, while Price and Guerdet delivered a pair of second-place individual performances to the host team’s point total of 91 on the invite.

Guerdet earned runner-up accolades by placing second in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:02.82, while Price cleared the sand in the long jump pit to a silver-medal distance of 17-11.

Gavyn Morphew rounded out the Warriors’ top-three showings by claiming the bronze in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:13.55.

In the girls’ competition, Fraker contributed to a pair of first-place relay finishes, added her skills to a second-place relay and captured third place in a sprint race to help pace North Union’s third-place team total of 107.

Fraker anchored the Warriors’ winning 4×200 relay squad that crossed the finish line in 1:53.21. Ella Ulrich, Naomi Jones and Libby Stevens handled the first three legs of the race before handing off to Fraker.

Ulrich, Beth Streuber, Fraker and Jones then combined speed skills to strike gold in the 800-meter sprint medley race in 2:00.12.

Ulrich, Jones, Stevens and Fraker then traded handoffs for a second-place time of 53.37 in the 4×100 relay.

Jacey Welbig anchored North Union’s runner-up distance medley relay that placed second in 4:59.42. Mylee Oleson, Adeline Kollasch and Streuber combined for the opening three legs before having Welbig seal the win. Welbig also claimed second place from an individual perspective, covering the 1,500-meter run in 5:52.57.

Olivia Merrill garnered silver medals in both throws for the Warriors. Merrill heaved the shot to a runner-up mark of 35-4 1/2, while making her mark in the discus with a toss of 88-3 1/2.

Brylie Deim rounded out the Warriors by claiming third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 23.41.
