MANKATO — First-year Fairmont head coach Jesse Walters’ Cardinals opened the spring track & field campaign with dominating performances in their indoor tuneups on the Minnesota State University campus Friday night.

Sprinter Corene Moeller, jumper Jazlyn Geerdes, long-distance runner Macy Hanson and hurdler Hadley Artz posted two individual wins apiece to trigger Fairmont girls’ winning point total of 217 — an incredible 143 better than runner-up New Ulm during the five-team meet.

Blue Earth Area (63), St. Peter (56) and St. James Area (44) rounded out the girls’ team standings, respectively.

In the boys’ portion of the indoor competition, long-distance runners Gavin Artner and Jordan Thompson, hurdler Braydon Lindsay, pole vaulter Ty Nawrocki, long jumper Trey Tumbleson and thrower Hank Artz each struck gold once individually to power the Cardinal boys lineup to a first-place team total of 236.

St. Peter claimed runner-up accolades at 101, followed by New Ulm (52), St. James Area (47) and Blue Earth Area (30), respectively.

Artner, who placed first in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:06, anchored the Fairmont 4×800-meter relay team’s winning time of 9:25.75. Thompson, Jaydon Putney and Nawrocki traded handoffs in handling the first three legs of the relay, respectively.

Thompson and Nawrocki delivered a respective 1-2 showing in the 800-meter run by crossing the finish line in 2:23 and 2:24.

Lindsay outdueled Tumbleson for top honors in the 60-meter intermediate hurdles, 9.42-9.75, while Nawrocki did likewise in edging Cardinal teammate Gage Borntrager for first place in the pole vault. Both Fairmont vaulters cleared 9 feet, 6 inches, with Nawrocki claiming first with less misses in the field event.

Tumbleson cleared 19-10 1/2 to strike gold in the long jump for Fairmont, while Artz rounded out the Cardinal boys winners by heaving the shot to a first-place distance of 49-5.

Tumbleson also ran the leadoff leg on Fairmont’s first-place 4×200 relay team that posted a time of 1:41.0. Borntrager, Caleb Chambers and Nolan Schultze exchanged handoffs to complete the winning performance.

Schultze, Chambers, Taylor Austin and Blaze Geiger capped the Cardinals’ first-place finishers by combining forces to break the tape in the 4×400 with a winning time of 3:51.

Chambers also captured second place in the 60-meter dash in 7.49 seconds, Tumbleson claimed the No. 2 spot in the open 200 (25.07), while Ethan Pockrus cleared the 60-meter high hurdles in a runner-up time of 9.69 for Fairmont.

In the girls’ division, Corene Moeller swept the 200- and 400-meter sprints before anchoring the Cardinals’ first-place 4×400 relay showing.

Moeller broke the tape in the open 400 in 1:03.6, bested the field in the open 200 with a time of 28.94 and ran the final leg on the winning 1,600-meter baton squad. Emelia Klanderud, Harper Artz and Abbie Simpson traded handoffs during the first three respective legs en route to a gold-medal time of 4:33.

Moeller held off teammate Bella Larson in the 200 (29.62), while beating Blue Earth Area’s Addison Armstrong to the finish line in the 400 (1:04.1).

Hadley Artz edged teammate Cadence Leiding for top honors in the 60-meter high hurdles, 10.78-10.91, respectively. Artz duplicated her wins by crossing the finish line just ahead of Leiding again in the 60-meter intermediate hurdles, 10.46-10.49, respectively.

Hanson nailed down first place in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:24, with teammate Carys Gudahl pocketing second place in 6:28.

Hanson later added the 800-meter crown to her indoor accolades by besting the field in 2:33 for Fairmont.

In the field events, Geerdes soared by the long jump field to claim top honors with a leap of 14-3. Geerdes then sprayed the sand to a first-place distance of 31-0 1/2 in the triple jump to hold off teammate Abbie Simpson (30-6 1/2).

Kennedy Becker completed Fairmont’s individual gold medalists by winning the open 60 meters with a time of 8.8, while the Cardinals added victories in the relays by striking gold in the 4×800 and medley relay.
