Martin Co. West sinks 3, ousts Madelia in Section 2A hoops clash

TRIMONT — Trey from the top of the key. Trifecta from the left wing. A 3-ball from the right corner.

Martin County West’s sharpshooting long-distance duo of Kari Matejka and Emily Anderson snapped the Trimont gymnasium nets from nearly every spot on the hardwood court on Friday night.

Matejka nailed a game-best five 3-pointers en route to 17 points, while Emily Anderson sank four treys to pace a game-high 20-point performance to power the No. 6-seeded Mavericks to a 71-26 rout over the No. 11-seeded Madelia Blackhawks during a Section 2A play-in basketball clash.

Martin County West (11-15) advances to face the No. 3-seeded Mountain Lake Area/Comfrey Wolverines (16-9) in a 7 p.m. sectional south sub-section quarterfinal on Tuesday night in Mountain Lake. The Wolverines netted a first-round bye.

Madelia ended its season with a 4-23 overall record.

“When you make the shots, life is good,” a grinning Martin County West head coach Rodger Taylor said in reference to his lineup’s 29-for-56 field-goal shooting effort — 52 percent — including a 9-for-15 performance from behind the 3-point arc for 60 percent.

“No, really, I thought Kari did a nice job of running the offense from the point, and I believe all five of our starters had at least one assist apiece.”

Matejka distributed a game-leading six helpers, Emily Anderson and Liv Borchardt each doled out three assists, while Ella Carlson and Thea Anderson found their open teammates twice each to account for 16 of Mavericks’ 20 assists. Maddie Carlson and Avery Sanders contributed two assists each off the bench.

After Ollie Glover powered her way for a low-post leaner to knot the game at 2-all for Madelia, Martin County West connected for four 3-point plays to serve as the catalyst behind a momentum-shifting 19-0 surge.

Borchardt converted a Matejka entry pass for an ‘and-1’ play to trigger the offensive outpouring before Thea Anderson sank a solo free throw.

Emily Anderson drilled a left-wing 3, Matejka swooshed a top-of-the-key trey and Emily Anderson added another left-wing triple.

Borchardt then spotted Emily Schettler for two of her 12 points off the bench for a low-post banker before Borchardt cashed in an Anderson feed and converted a midcourt steal into a layup for a 21-2 lead at the 11-minute mark.

After Madelia guard Alicia Lugo tossed in two of her six points on the game and Glover sank two free throws, Matejka and Emily Anderson closed the first half with — what else — back-to-back 3s in the final minute for a 45-9 lead by intermission.

Katherine DeVlaeminck netted all eight of her points during the second half for the Blackhawks, but it was not enough to prevent running time down the stretch.

DeVlaeminck also grabbed a game-best seven rebounds and rejected a game-high four shots, while Glover topped Madelia with nine points. Lugo chipped in six points and a game-best four steals.
