Farrell guides Lancers to 9-2 hockey win over Cardinals

LA CRESCENT — Wyatt Farrell erupted for a five-point performance, including a natural hat trick, to joust the La Crescent-Hokah Lancers to a 9-2 triumph over the Fairmont Area Cardinals during nonconference hockey action on Saturday.

Farrell, who finished with a game-best four goals to go with one assist, followed teammate Nikolas Kubecka’s game-opening net-finding shot with three consecutive lamplighters to build a 4-0 lead for the Lancers after the first period.

Kubecka, who tallied his goal off a double-assist from Nathan Masterson and Ethan Myhre 4:04 after the initial face-off, dished out back-to-back helpers on Farrell’s scoring surge.

Farrell found the twine off Kubecka passes at the 7:58 and 15:00 junctures, respectively, before Farrell capped the opening segment with a goal from Alex Von Arx with just 54 seconds left in the frame.

Farrell then switched roles and fed Myhre for a second-period goal before Mitchell Reining netted an unassisted goal and then teammed with Von Arx to set up Logan DeBoer’s goal to extend the Lancers’ lead to 7-0.

Nate Rakness finally ended the Cardinals’ shutout by hammering home an unassisted goal 4:08 into the third period.

Farrell, however, countered by cashing in one of Reining’s game-best three assists for a goal at the 7:01 mark.

Luke Kester then tallied Fairmont Area’s second twine-finder off a Brock Lutterman assist at the 12:58 juncture before Myhre netted his second goal of the game at 14:50.

Carson Johnson produced a game-best 42 saves between the pipes for the Cardinals, who generated 19 shots on goal. Lancer netminder Collin Morken gained the win by making 17 stops.

Fairmont Area (0-4) plays host to Worthington at 7 p.m. Tuesday night at Martin County Arena in Fairmont.

LaCrescent-Hokah (5-2) plays host to Viroqua at 7 p.m. Tuesday night in LaCrescent.
