DeMaris, Hartke run to Valley Conference gold

LAKE CRYSTAL — Valley Conference cross country champions.

Martin County West’s Katie Hartke and Madelia/Truman/Granada-Huntley-East Chain/ Martin Luther’s Josiah DeMaris can add that honor to their prep running resumes after Tuesday’s 5K races in Lake Crystal.

Hartke crossed the finish line in a first-place time of 21:46.51 to power the Mavericks to the conference girls team championship with a score of 33 — 10 better than runner-up Mankato Loyola/Cleveland and 11 over third-place Lake Crystal-Wellcome Memorial/Nicollet.

Maddison Lyon contributed a bronze-medal mark of 22:24.85 to Martin County West’s winning ways, while teammates Liz Peterson and Evelynn Christenson placed back-to-back in seventh (23:36.39) and eighth (24:18.6).

Katelynn Kennedy rounded the Mavericks’ top team total by claiming 14th overall with a time of 26:18.27.

DeMaris, who holds the No. 8 spot in the Class A state boys individual rankings, coasted to the only sub-17 minute time of 16:51.78 to strike gold for the Jayhawks.

MTGHECML netted a score of 69 to take third behind champion Loyola/Cleveland (31) and runner-up LCWM/ Nicollet (53).

Ryan Koberoski captured sixth place in 17:52.23 to add scoring punch behind DeMaris on the Jayhawks, while Carson Meraz chipped in a 21st-place showing of 19:29.27.

Eddie Ramirez placed 26th with a time of 20:18.85 for the Jayhawks, while Jake Lehman capped the counting scores with 29th-place effort of 20:38.11.

Caleb DeCann (31st, 20:51.88), Caden McMullen (33rd, 21:30.96), Cross Schmidt (36th, 22:58.05), Hayden Jones (37th, 23:07.37) and Tate Becker (38th, 23:09.64) completed the Jayhawks’ team performance.

Jamesson Forsberg garnered seventh place overall by crossing the finish line in 17:58.22 to steer Martin County West to fourth place in the team competition with a score of 84.

Grant Koehnen delivered a 10th-place performance of 18:13.94 for the Mavericks, while teammate Riley Cole supplied a 19:03.36 to place 19th overall.

Nick Matejka and David Taylor capped MCW’s counting marks by taking 30th (20:44.96) and 35th (22:09.43), respectively.

Hayden O’Connor (39th, 23:30.11) and Lincoln Kennedy (40th, 23:57.71) completed the Mavericks’ effort on the day.

Martin County West and Madelia/Truman/ GHEC/Martin Luther compete in the Section 2A Meet at 4 p.m. Thursday at Baylor Park in Norwood Young America.
